Title: Facebook is becoming Big Brother
Post by: Rush on March 07, 2019, 06:38:24 AM
Facebook is rolling out a new policy. You will no longer be able to post political ads or any content ADS related to issues of national importance unless you "confirm your identity" with Facebook and get a special authorization code.  This involves giving your physical address, last 4 digits of your SS# and a picture ID.  This will be required before posting content related to the following topics:

abortion
budget
civil rights
crime
economy
education
energy
environment
foreign policy
government reform
guns
health
immigration
infrastructure
military
poverty
social security
taxes
terrorism
values

They will also make you do this if you have a large number of followers regardless of what you post.

No, I will not be doing this. Wow.

Corrected - looks like it's ads only.

There goes WalkAway. All the posts from WalkAways contain some or all of those subjects.

This is stunning. It’ll all be cat videos and the like. Unless fb fakes that leftists have actually “registered” when they haven’t and socialist stuff is passed around their filters.

Can you imagine the amount of oversight that will require?

Who will actually give out their personal data? Will this drive people off fb entirely? I don’t even like giving my email out as verification.

Unbelievable. I actually wondered for a second if it was April Fools Day.

I left facebook in early 2016 when they were getting out of hand...the only thing on my account now is my save for Candy Crush.  I also belong to a World of Warcraft guild group and an Aviation Buy/Sell/Trade group.  But I never look at them anymore.

Am I missing something? That policy seems to apply only to political ADS, not to political content in general. Or are they weaseling the term "ad" to mean something more general than it normally does?

If so, where is their definition of "ad" given?

If not, then... nothing to see here, move on.

(Which is NOT to say that I think Facebook is benign, far from it... I consider it a form of addictive malware and once completely deleted my account; now I use it only for certain private groups such as New England Pilots.)

You're right, I think I misunderstood.  They have a table with examples of ads that are "political" and ads that are not.  I'm going to try to attach a Word document.

It's from https://www.facebook.com/business/help/313752069181919
You have to click on "United States".
