Title: Mike Schmidt's comments racist? Off base?
Post by: Anthony on June 07, 2017, 07:10:51 AM
This story is local to me, but has made national news.  The media, to a large degree, is calling it racist, insensitive, and offensive.  I heard the interview real time, and thought it could have been phrased a little differently considering Schmidt is an employee of the Phillies.  However, I appreciated his honesty.  To the radio stations credit, they defended Schmidt's comment today with the host of the morning show (original interviewer) saying this PC crap has to stop, and people that are offended need to get a life.  The rest of the media said the opposite.

But that's a far different subject from the one raised Tuesday, when Schmidt inexplicably declared that the Phillies cannot build their team around Odubel Herrera because the Venezuelan-born center fielder does not speak enough English. Thanks to the racial overtones, it was news that went viral in an instant.

Cataldi's question was clear: Can you build a team around Herrera?

"My honest answer to that would be no because of a couple of things," Schmidt said. "First of all, it is a language barrier. Because of that, I think he can't be a guy that would sort of sit in a circle with four or five American players and talk about the game or try to learn about the game or discuss the inner workings of the game."

Racist, offensive, culturally insensitive?  What say you?

Nope, it's called "the truth".

PC Warriors have weaponized this crap against anyone who they disagree.   This whole PC culture needs to come to a screaming halt.

Problem is we now have an entire generation who was taught this crap and indoctrinated.

I think the country, except for the media, and many Democrats is tiring of the PC culture.  At least we now have leadership (Trump) that is against it.  If you read the comments to the article I posted, and some others published, many are anti PC.  Also, the article has a pole that indicated 55% of people were OK with Schmidt's comments.  This is on a very left leaning website for the Phila. Inquirer, and Daily News.  Both notorious liberal/progressive rags.

The entire charade of looking for and calling attention to "racist undertones" in every comment is wearing every bit as thin as is the lies of the MMGW liars. Once you abuse the topic to the point that people are accused of racism because they point out that CNN has become a network who does virtually nothing but publish fake news, you start to lose the vast majority of your believability.

Pretty soon those who cry wolf over every stupid thought for no other reason than to get attention will cease to be part of the national discussion and relegated to the same stupid category as those who claimed the planet was headed for a massive ice age due to Americans driving cars. They are the instrument of their own demise.

Language isn't an inherited trait, it is a learned one, like learning how to play baseball.
Everyone who claimed racism is showing profound stupidity. Stupid people tend to "double down" on their stupidity, so they will not now or ever say "Oops, good point, I made a mistake."

How is saying a team should all speak the same language racist?  Because the assumed language would be English?  Is there an expectation that the rest of the team is supposed to learn Spanish instead of him learning English?  Isn't that a double standard?

See what contortions you have to go through to get this to be racist? The assumptions?  It basically means since this country is virtually completely an English speaking  nation, that means we're racist period.  Because English white people are evil compared to brown or Spanish or any other people on the planet.

That's the underlying sentiment.

It is just another way for the misguided, and self righteous, feel good media, and Democrats to keep us divided.  If they can create controversy they think they are winning the argument, and get ratings.

The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

What he said is that Herrera does not speak English well enough to engage in discussions with his teammates about how to improve their play and the team.  I find nothing racist in that at all, in fact I need to stretch to even understand what the progressives are trying to claim and I think I still fall short.

This is like a fart.  Whoever smells it first is the source.
