I bet if you polled people the obsessive use of a mask will fall right down party lines, with Democrats (new style liberals, progressives, communists) embracing the need and use of masks. Those on the Right probably know it is pretty much for show and an indication of willful Government subservience. What say you?
Went for a hike yesterday in the woods. Grown man, hiking alone coming the opposite way, wearing a MASK. I wanted to ask him if he was trying to keep the squirrels safe or thought maybe they could give him the Virus. ::)

It might be more urban vs rural which also falls along party lines, but the areas that have heavy caseloads probably fuels the panic that make people wear masks and the areas with no cases, people don’t see the point.
We went out to eat last night to a restaurant with a bar and no one had a mask, I didn’t see one, and people were packed shoulder to shoulder at the bar. There are some people here scared of the virus, my 80 year old neighbor was griping at me that everyone should wear a mask and she is a Trump supporter. But then she’s in a high risk group. But we have so few cases here I still don’t know anyone whose gotten it.

Mask are being used (not by all) for virtue signalling.
For those actually at risk, it's understandable. But many no where even close to being at risk are doing it to purely virtue signal.

“Leaders” with which millions of people seem to be putting their faith know little more than the rest of us, and in most cases (such as with politicians) they know decidedly less than the rest of us. They are all winging it, including the medical professionals. So I don't believe masks help, and can hurt us in the long run, so I will handle masks accordingly. FYI I've only worn one once when my eye doctor's office required it. It's their right, so I complied and didn't complain. I do reject the face mask shaming that is happening in some places. People are using lies and the fear with which they've been fed as a way to virtue signal. It's sickening.
By the way on 60 Minutes on March 8 Fauci said masks weren’t necessary and could actually prove detrimental. Now he says differently. What’s changed, other than evidence that the experts have been wrong all along with their predictions.

My remote work group skypes all day. One of them just bragged that he wears his in his car "just to set an example". That's an outright admission of virtue signaling, and "mask-shaming".

Sitting in doctor office. They require masks. Starting to get a headache from the stale air I keep breathing in and out of the mask. It's coming off as soon as I get out the door. These homemade masks don't do shit to protect anyone.

As someone dealing with mobility issues, it has led me to being out of shape. I do get winded easily, and masks don't help.

I have yet to put one on. I don't know what will happen when somebody makes me. I have a thing about cloth over my nose. It makes me feel like someone is trying to suffocate me.

Sounds like a medical reason to me. And I'm being serious.
Even here in panickville USA (aka Massaschusetts), you cannot be forced to wear a mask for medical reasons and you don't have to show any papers documenting said medical reason.

The last time I remember a mask being put on my face for medical reasons I was six years old and getting ready to have my tonsils out. I recall seeing it come toward me and being told to count backwards from 100. I made it to 97. Next thing I was floating in the corner watching the surgeon cross the room toward a body (me) on the table, and then nothing until I woke up in some other room with my parents over me and my father holding up two fingers and asking me how many fingers I saw. And my throat hurt like hell.
