Title: Brookline - home of the idiots
Post by: President-Elect Bob Noel on November 22, 2019, 06:13:26 AM
Brookline Massachusetts is the first MA city/town to ban natural gas and oil in new buildings.  The ban requires new buildings and major rehabs to go all electric.

"In the end, this moves us away from a future that is reliant on fossil fuels"

It is left as an exercise for the reader to list at least a couple of a fallacies with this ban...

I believe Berkeley, CA has banned natural gas as well, and there is a bill in the California House to ban it statewide.  I can't imagine a more stupid policy.  Natural Gas is clean, inexpensive and very abundant in the U.S.  It is helping to make us energy independent, and a net exporter of energy.

California is buying much of its electricity out of state and mandating wind, and solar generation, so  their costs are through the roof.  They also can't keep the power on due to extreme environmental policy which does not allow forests to be cut back as much as they should around power lines.

The Democrats (Progressives) are now totally out of control and are damaging the basic standard of living and quality of life of people.  Yet the rich elite that back them still maintain their lifestyles.

I wonder how stand-by generators will be powered in Brookline...

Gasoline, Diesel, or Rainbow and Unicorn power.

It is now obvious, not only are these people misguided, and mentally ill, they are just plain STUPID.

All of the above.

What is the main source of electricity generated in the eastern US? Coal?

Coal, Natural Gas, Nuke.  In that order I believe, and then maybe Hydro.

These laws are not about the environment.  They are about control, and misguided, feel good attempts for Progressives to say they are doing SOMETHING, anything!  It is just like with yet more gun laws added to the 22,000 already on the books, for the most part illegally.

There are natural gas generating plants? I did not know that.

Coal, eh? Heh heh ...

Yes, the vast majority of plants coming on line in the last twenty years, maybe more, are natural gas fired "peaker plants' to handle peak demand in the hottest summer months and coldest winter months.  Natural gas can be turned off and on a lot easier than coal, plus it doesn't require the scrubbers for emissions like coal.

I’m in the PNW where a sizeable chunk of our electricity is generated by hydro. Naturally, the Dems are constantly trying to take out our dams to save salmon from perishing on the fish ladders. I kid you not ... my reps are always sending out newsletters detailing the bizarre ways the Dems are itching to employ to justify removing the dams.

Even aside from the decades it would take to recover similar generating power, the sediments released from such idiotic actions would be heinously hard to deal with. Plus resettlements, etc.

That’s right. Gas about 33%, coal, 30%, nuke 20% hydro 7% and the rest wind, solar and oil.

The “base” is nuke and coal. That is, the hardest to start up but the cheapest to run over a long time, so they cover the minimum demand. You want them going all the time with minimal downtime. The gas turbines like you say to handle peak demand for the most part but can be part base.

Wind and solar is completely condition dependent and contributes only when the wind blows and the sun shines and is per megawatt the least efficient and most expensive, but this is hidden by government subsidies so the market doesn’t know the true cost.

Hydro depends on altering the environment but once built supplies low cost energy with little impact on the environment once you altered it in a major way by building the dam.

30 years ago the plan was to replace dirty coal with clean nuclear but public hysteria over meltdowns and nuke waste and government regulation ruined the economics of it, so many planned nuke plants were canceled.

The public is being tricked into thinking solar and wind are the cheapest and will save the future. It’s a hoax. Right now we still have at least 1000 years of fossil fuels left (despite what the media says) and nuclear would supply the future with clean energy indefinitely.

Nothing wrong with solar and wind - if you let the market supply it honestly at true cost. But it will never support modern civilization.

geothermal  (but don't talk about the carbon footprint for the equipment to dig the wells....)

I wonder how well (no pun) geothermal would work in Florida...

My neighbor installed a geothermal heating system in his home.  A derrick the size of the Eiffel Tower was on his lawn for about two weeks, or probably more.  After the Indian Burial ground was unearthed, and they got past the oil, gold and silver strikes (he has no mineral rights) the project was completed.  He told me after he croaks the guy that buys his house MAY see a payback.

It has been used in small scale,
for cooling purposes.

At this point, why does it matter?

It really is the most important subject of all so why not pin it. People take energy for granted.

Stunning. Same with wind power. Can there be a better place for wind turbines, that are dangerous and ugly on land, than offshore at, say, Cape Cod, Nantucket, etc.?  Then all of the sudden the left are NIMBYs.

They don't want Nuke either.

In my area the big protest is over a new gas pipeline being put in RIGHT NEXT TO the old one to carry different product from the fracking fields in northern and western PA to Marcus Hook on the Delaware River some of which is to be liquefied and exported.  HUGE boom for the economy and great for energy in general.  They are fighting it tooth and nail for "environmental reasons".  They are too stupid to realize it is much more dangerous to transport by rail, or road, and may make the economics so it isn't worth it.  Duh!  Idiots!

Oh, and the pipeline runs through my development one property over from me.  The one that is already there has been there for almost 100 years.
