Title: Dirty Harry franchise...
Post by: President-Elect Bob Noel on August 06, 2019, 04:25:45 PM
Every once in a while I rewatch some of my DVDs.   I've just finished watching "Magnum Force" and also watching one of the special features on the DVD: "A Moral Right:  The Politics of Dirty Harry".  That special feature was produced in 2008.

It was interesting to hear those interviewed talk about divisions in American society in the early 70's, how the Harry Callahan movies shocked liberals of the time, Clint Eastwood being labelled Facist, etc etc etc.   " people use the word 'Facist' too much, they use the word 'Racist' too much.  ...they just use it as a word sometimes .... and it works because it gets people's attention.  But those words should really mean something.  You shouldn't just throw those words around"

I was struck the similarity to what's happening today.

These words have no meaning any more. Or better, they are more descriptive of the person saying them than the target of them.

I remember when those movies came out.  I think I saw them all in the theaters, as well as films like The Getaway with Steve McQueen.  Eastwood, and McQueen were the two gods of the cinema for us 10 - 14 year old boys who thought they were cool, and always got the bad guys.

The societal environment at the time was that criminals were getting off, and people were now blaming "society" for their actions.  Also, the entire view as Blacks as victims was becoming popular.  That's why Clint was called a fascist, and racist, even back then.

I like the Charles Bronson movies.

Liberals are pussies and liars.
That’s why they hate those kinds of movies.
