My wife tried to order groceries last night and gave up. Pretty much anything she wanted to get this week is unavailable. Tilapia? Nope. Salmon? Uhuh. Chicken? Flown the coop. Apples? Yeah right...

I’m going to the store tomorrow morning, I wonder what it will be like. Last week most stuff was fine, the only thing I wanted that wasn’t there was SmartWater. Well shit. I just found out SmartWater is owned by Coca-Cola.
-
Just got done at Aldi and Publix. Gatorade still in short supply. Twice a week I use Banquet Heat & Serve sausage links. This week they are BOGO at Publix. Their sale runs Wednesday to Tuesday. Shelf was empty and no rain checks still.

I have been buying either a pig or 1/2 a cow every year for a local farmer that has it butchered. I switch between the 2 as what to buy.
Not ready to buy yet, but really thinking maybe I should by earlier and overflows he freezers before prices go sky high.

Do you have a generator for when the blackouts come so all your meat doesn’t rot? Do you have an endless supply of fuel for the generator?
I can’t believe all the unnecessary economic catastrophe the covidians and the Biden administration are causing.

We do that too, but not the full hog. Lately we’ve been buying strictly Berkshire pork.
I can’t tell the difference between “certified black Angus” beef and any other beef, but Berkshire pork is unbelievably tender.

No, I am not set up for total disaster just minor.

No, I am not set up for total disaster just minor.
We have a generator powered by natural gas but if that went down, and it could in a hurricane or anything, we’d be sool too. We were pretty well stocked up in the mountains but since we moved not so much. I did buy more long term emergency food last week. Supplies are selling out and prices are up but most of my food is 15 years old although it is good for 30. Just probably doesn’t taste quite as good. And it isn’t health food, it’s high carb, lots of rice and pasta. You can get paleo/carnivore type dehydrated emergency food. I have some of that but it’s more expensive and quite frankly doesn’t taste quite the same. But then I’m a carb addict so there’s that.

Just got back from HEB. That’s a grocery store for those of you not from Texas. No shortages. There was a small section of one freezer case bare, looked like normally it had frozen breakfast meals. That was it. Tons of produce, meat cases all packed, center aisle shelves all crammed with the usual poison: chips, bread, pasta, processed boxes of crap, candy, canned meats and vegetables, spices, dairy cases all full, personal care items no empty shelves, paper products out the wazoo.
It is actually much better than last year and even this spring when there were sporadic shortages of random things. I’m not sure why other than HEB seems really proactive about the situation. I don’t know what Wal-Mart is like, been a while since I went there.

HEB has it's own warehousing and trucking network. Plus HEB uses many vendors from Texas and surrounding states as well as Mexico. They may take a few hits from national vendors, but as far as most everyday items and food they shouldn't be hit too hard by the bare shelves syndrome brought on by the Biden Administration.

I’m really liking DeSantis. I wonder what Biden will come up with to try to block this free exercise of trade.

Not seeing bare shelves yet but certain items I buy and like are unavailable right now. Gasoline is spiking terribly. Up $1.10 per gal since Biden.

I don't remember where - but I heard the other day that the problem in long beach is the crane operators not working quickly. They're just taking their sweet time doing whatever they want. There's a report that one operator took 3 hours to offload a single container.
It takes about 2.5 weeks to go from California to Jacksonville, FL, IF you could get an appointment through the panama canal. It's good press, but unlikely anyone is going to ship from china to florida. More likely is vancouver or mexico where people care about working and want a job.

No doubt at the orders from the union.

It’s finally hitting here. This morning the store had lots of empty shelves. Not a major percent of them, but obvious holes in supplies. For example a brand would be missing, or a size of a brand, like laundry detergent. Only the biggest dispenser of All Free and Clear was there, the regular size was missing and the shelf was empty.
At checkout I asked the clerk if they’ve noticed supply shortages and she said, “yes, like what’s in the dairy case right now is all there is, there’s no more in the back.” I was there early in the morning, does that mean later in the day they will be sold out of milk? Surely we have dairy cows in Texas… trucker shortage?

Just got back from shopping. No cream at the grocery store. I had to buy half and half instead of heavy cream and they didn’t have much of that. OTC meds had lots of empty sections. There was lots of meat but really expensive.

Here in Washington state we’ve been missing cream since before Christmas. Dairy shelves in general are sparsely stocked. Also pharmacy items too. And jugged water.
Is this a slow, frog-in-the-pot plan to get us used to having less?
-
Ran to get a couple of things and to exchange an empty propane tank. Several section of shelves were quite empty. Propane exchange used to be $17.99, now $21.99 up 22%. All these things ups 20% or more yet official inflation is 7.2%, give me a fucking break.
Calling for crappy weather here in Georgia Saturday night into Sunday. I have a load of firewood and a full propane tank for the grill, bring it on. While in Publix I overheard a lady telling a guy that the Kroger had people lined up out the door.
-
My husband says the cream shortage might be caused by the elite cabal appropriating it all to make cheese for their bunkers.
Haha? Or possible reality? Never before in my life have our minds gone in directions like this.
But now we have a major railroad on strike.
If you need critical items for health and well being, stock up.
Hunger causes rebellions. And they want us to get violent.

I take my propane tanks to be filled. $4.19 gallon at the local farm store. Around $35 for 2 tanks. I don't do the exchange anymore. Don't know how beat up/old the tanks you are getting.

We do have an ACE hardware in the area that fills. Haven't used them in a while.

I once went through an entire Blue Rhino rack to find a single tank I thought was safe, with no rust. That was the last time I exchanged tanks.

Why are you buying heavy cream???
-
We do have an ACE hardware in the area that fills. Haven't used them in a while.
I find that the refill stations around here cost about half what Blue Rhino charges, but I used them (BR) once because they were about a mile away instead of three miles to the refill station. But when I found out that they not only cost twice as much, they only provide 15 pounds instead of 20 pounds of fuel I vowed never to use them again. Besides the cost, they aren't any faster because you have to drop them off outside and go inside to pay and have someone come out and unlock the cage for you. My refill station gets the tank out of my truck, fills it up, returns it and collects payment right there.
-
Why are you buying heavy cream???
Why not? What’s wrong with heavy cream?
I put it in my coffee. When they say “cream” with respect to coffee, and then use half and half, or milk, or artificial powdered crap, it’s wrong. The word “cream” means exactly that.
-
I use heavy cream for cooking. Just used some in my omelet for breakfast.

Cream is ambrosia from heaven. Followed closely by butter.
Julia Child famously said that if you’re afraid of cream, use butter instead.

When I was in France, it was next to impossible to get cream for coffee. Every time I'd ask for it - du cafe avec du creme SVP. Pas du lait, du creme - the waiter would get this look on his face like I'd just asked for a glass of ketchup. Then he would relax and walk away and I knew I wasn't getting creme. Sure enough, he brought me some nice milk. That happened probably 90% of the time.
Coffee, blond and sweet is the way to have your coffee. I never understood the people who wanted things black and bitter.

Black doesn't have to be bitter. I get coffee from a local roaster that has a very smooth chocolatey flavor and is delicious without cream or sugar.

Bitterness isn’t caused by dark roasting or drinking it without cream or sugar. It’s caused by bad brewing, old, rancid beans, and not keeping your equipment clean.

OK, Sea Story time:
Many, many years ago at NAF Atsugi there was a young airman who was having a very troubled time with the Navy. This young airman found himself on midnight hangar watches.
One function of the midnight hangar watch was to prepare the coffee pot for the incoming 7am crew. So one morning in wanders the maintenance officers who draw their morning cup to prepare for the day. As they start their first cup, they are amazed at how wonderful the coffee is! By golly this has to be the best coffee ever!
In comes the maintenance Chief who gets his first cup and before he drinks, starts smelling the cup. WTF?? Something ain't right! Then the Chief proclaims "Hey, someone pissed in this coffee!"
Immediately everyone begins dumping their coffee in the sink! Needless to say, the troubled young airman is removed from hangar watch duty (it was never proven he was the pisser) and assigned elsewhere. ;)

That must have been some pretty bad coffee if putting piss in it made it better.

When I was a Marine, a SSgt in my shop used to brew his own coffee in his own percolator, which he never cleaned. Before he transfered to another unit, me and another salty E-3 cleaned it for him. Cardinal sin for some people. He was not happy to say the least. A week later I let him pin Cpl stripes on me, and he made sure they stuck. They did not have the clips on the back of them and blood might have been drawn. Good times.
Supposedly an old navy trick was to add salt to coffee to cut the bitterness.
-

It is an acquired taste, I think. I only got into it because early in my career I worked at an office that offered water, tea bags, and coffee as beverages. Water gets boring and tea took longer than I cared to steep (and wasn't that different from coffee anyway) so with plenty of sugar and fake creamer I learned to enjoy coffee. I can now drink coffee black and mostly enjoy it. Otherwise I add a teaspoon or so of sugar and some heavy whipping cream to my one cup of morning coffee.
Actually I think beer and wine are acquired tastes, too. Definitely recall thinking WTF in my youth when I first tried them. But you couldn't be cool or part of the crowd unless you joined in.
-

Me too, but I think that first beer was something like PBR or Beast (Milwaukee's Best). It was cheap, mass produced and pretty awful.

That young airman was lucky. They could have kept him on and there are far, far worse things than hangar duty at the midwatch.
-

The Beast! Many a friday afternoon after high school was spent driving 45 minutes to my older cousins college so he would buy us $8 cases of Beast before the football games.

Agree with this. A lot of things are acquired tastes and it’s much easier to acquire if you start young. There are some foods that unless you were exposed to them as a child, you would have great difficulty ever liking them or even being able to eat them at all. I had not seen or tasted an avocado until I was well into adulthood. It took me a long time to get accustomed to the weird taste and finally come to like avocados. On the other hand I was regularly fed okra as a child and not the fried kind, just the slimy boiled kind, so boiled okra to me is a normal delicious food.
Really exotic stuff like bugs, I would never, ever get used to. But if fed them as a child they’re normal. I’m sure it can work in reverse too. My husband doesn’t like Brussels sprouts because he was fed them as a child. But I argue that his mother didn’t cook them right. Overcooked Brussels sprouts are disgusting but if you roast them with the right seasoning they’re delicious.
I didn’t start drinking coffee until I was in college and my friends would sit in the restaurant and drink coffee all afternoon so I followed suit. It was disgusting horrible coffee but I learned to appreciate the caffeine kick which was useful when staying up late to study or getting up to go to an early class. When I got out into the working world, everybody at the office would drink coffee that was kept in a big pot in the break room. It was horrible tasting stuff but again, the caffeine kick was the point. The coffee itself was just a delivery vehicle for the drug.
It wasn’t until later when I started roasting my own that I finally tasted really good coffee and now it’s the taste more than the caffeine that I’m after.
-
My daily routine is one mug of Kirkland Breakfast Blend first thing. Half & half with Splenda. The mug holds a Keurig large and small at the same time. Rest of the day is 32 ounce cups of water all day, generally 3-5 cups. While watching some TV after 8:00 I'll have a small Coke Zero bottle or now Pepsi Zero, since Coke changed their formula. Also keep some bottle of Sparkling Ice around.

Long ago when I was a kid I had gastroenteritis, causing me to barf a LOT. Got put in a Navy hospital. They cleaned out my barf pan with alcohol. That did it. Now every time I smell alcohol my stomach turns, so never had a drink. Ever. Made me very popular at parties as I was always ready to be their designated driver.

I HATE alcohol. Can't drink it, no matter what.
I've always thought of being the designated driver as an honor.
It gives me peace knowing I helped get people home safe. Those I drive and those that never crossed paths with those who were drunk and got a ride with me.
-
I don’t like alcohol either. I’ll have one drink once in a blue moon under just the right conditions, but for the most part stay away from alcohol. It makes me feel good for 30 minutes then like shit for 12 hours, not worth it. I might have one or two drinks per year.
-
Also don't drink
-
That's OK if you guys don't drink. I don't mind picking up your slack.
-
I do the majority of my drinking on vacations. 82 days until my next cruise.
-
I do the majority of my drinking on vacations. 82 days until my next cruise.
When we owned a house on Ocracoke I’d get a beer at Howard’s Pub along with oysters on the half shell. Anchor Steam draft. It was so good. It was a case of conditions being just right. I might have 7 in a year if we vacationed there for a week.

Bummer.
All I can say is I had the most memorable delicious Long Island Iced Tea once while lazing outside on a warm sunny day at a beach hotel at Myrtle Beach, SC. Mind you, I was a teetotaler up till my mid-twenties when I fell in with a "bad crowd" when I returned to college. Resumed being a mostly teetotaler when I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and went on Methotrexate - my "no soup for you!" doc said I should abstain from alcohol lest the combo of drug and alcohol damage my liver. The damage being proportional to the exposure I do have a few sips of wine once in a while.
-

I’m with you Joe. I don’t trust people who don’t drink.

never acquired the taste for booze.
Not drinking makes it easy to know when you can drive, fly, or shoot... no worrying about how long it's been.
