Title: Getting a call sign
Post by: Little Joe on June 02, 2016, 05:52:06 AM
Sorry about the aviation related thread here in the zone,

But how does one get a call sign?

I plan to fly to Canada this fall so I applied or an RR (Restricted Radiotelephone License).  I thought I would be assigned a call sign, but I wasn't.

Also, how do you get a radio station license for the plane?  I went to the site to apply, but it pops up a PDF, but has no directions on where to send it.  I finally figured out how to edit and sign the PDF online, but when I try to send it, it promtps me for an Adobe username and password.  I happen to have that so I entered that and tried again to submit, but it merely creates a link that I can provide to someone else to "share" the document.

Perhaps I am too stupid to fly to Canada, but I can't figure this shit out.

I'll reach out to a former partner that has flown to Canada.

Thanks, but I got it figured out.
I was using the link from the AOPA web site.  That didn't work so I emailed the FCC who sent me back a long, convoluted instruction set, but it did finally work and I received both the Radiotelephone operator permit and the Station permit.  The DHS decal was relatively easy to get, but I have to wait for it to be mailed (I think).

Canada, here we come, in late July.

I also hear there is a little air show going on up around Wisconsin about that time.  I may have to stop in and see if anyone else has heard about it.   :)

Just remember that it is required to end all radio communications with 'eh.  ;)

We are going to do a big circle around the great lakes and explore the areas within a few hours radiating out from there in any direction.  Places like Thunder Bay, Saul Ste Marie, Toronto.

It largely depends on weather.  We had originally planned on flying to Alaska, but we hear the weather can be pretty treacherous around that time of year.  Next year we will have more flexibility in our schedule.

I've made it my life's mission to avoid Toronto at all costs.  I had to drive the north shore of Superior once, and boring as all hell.  Hours and hours and hours of nothing but pine trees 10 feet on either side of the road.

I don't plan to be that low very often. ;)

Excellent!  That little air show in WI is a small, intimate gathering. You'll love it!
