Title: Why is unemployment so high?
Post by: Johnh on November 17, 2015, 02:48:19 PM
There are plenty of jobs available.  But there are not enough qualified people.
Part of the reason (a big part) that I sold my business and retired was that it was so difficult to find qualified workers with a good work ethics, no matter how much I offered.

eta:  By "unemployment so high", I am talking about workforce participation, and all the low paid positions.  I never could find sufficient people to hire that would have warranted the higher wages.

When one considers the condition of public schools, and the deplorable manner in which universities are being used as progressive indoctrination centers, it is easy to discover why there are so few qualified employees to go around.
Stupid seems to be the new normal for educators.

This is a huge problem.  People need to be trained more in the TRADES, and to actually make stuff.  "Minority Women, and Transgender Studies" will get you a job at McDonalds, MAYBE.

Marco Rubio made a great point about the trades in the last debate.

He did make a good point, but if his facts were correct, it would have resounded more.  In reality, Philosophers do make more money than welders. (disclaimer, there are always exceptions and ways to distort statistics, but in general, I stand by my statement).  Even when someone has a good point, they have to be able to deliver it effectively and be able to back it up.

edit to change "plumbers" to "welders", which is what Rubio actually said.

And the fact that universities will scam kids out of big money for BS[1] degrees. I recently talked with a young man who was excited to have just graduated from college. His degree: Adventure Sports! Holy cow!

In addition to the stupid degrees, kids are taking six years to complete college.  I don't understand.  It used to be four and out!

During my tenure as a director one of my responsibilities was staffing.  Not only is the educational background lacking but finding one who passed that hurdle couldn't pass a piss and/or background check.  It was a rude awakening to see how many come back positive not for weed (which wouldn't necessarily prevent one from being hired) but for cocaine.

So many parents I talk to want their kid to enjoy the "college" experience before moving on to real life, even if it results in 5-6 years. While I enjoyed school, I couldn't wait to get out and start making money and living my own life. My parents were very strict, I couldn't get out from 'under the thumb' fast enough...

My extended family operates a small grocery store. We all pitch in when necessary.
The number of college educated young folks, trying to get a minimum wage job would shock you, along with the lack of recognizable skills, from organization, to examination, theses college grads are lacking the basic skills necessary to survive in the work force.
Something has to change before the entire commercial establishment implodes from lack of useful workers.

What kind of business was this? In high tech  I hear the same song but it comes down to bean counters not wanting to pay for domestic talent when they can hire "contractors" from Bangalore, BOGO.

Damn right. There was no engineer shortage, employers found that they could bring in people on the H1-B and these people would be happy to work for damn near anything offered. And now everyone wonders why nobody wants to go into engineering. Dead end field. America sold out by corporate execs yet again.

Well to be fair it was actually the Board of Directors, and stock holders demanding that Gross Margins me kept in line with their goals.  The corporate execs are just the facilitators.

The business was a veterinary hospital.  I was looking for qualified veterinary technicians, or even trainable candidates.  Most of the resumes I got looked like they were from a grammar school.

its not entirely on the employee side of things

i know from personal experience, i retired from being an auto mechanic after 15 years, joined the Air Force and subsequently used my GI Bill to become a helicopter pilot as well as gaining my A&P through practical experience. So, working in the helicopter tour business was only seasonal so I tried every off season to get a job at any of the auto parts stores during the winter, no dice. plenty qualified to do the job.

heck i even remember one time going in to get a muffler for my truck, trying to explain to the guy its a custom exhaust system, blah, blah, blah and he proceeds to say "let's look in the system"  ::) so after a while the manager comes by both of them saying well we can't help you  ::) after arguing for over 20 minutes with these two i point at the book on the shelf behind them and politely ask to see it, flipped to the back and cross referenced by the size and inlet/outlet i wanted and had them look it up "yep got that one in stock" i swear both of their jaws hit the counter "never knew you could do that...."

that's just one example of a job i know without a doubt I could do. yea i would be green as any noob in some regards but I would ripen a whole lot quicker given the chance.

so,,, yea... if you can't get past the electronic job application how you supposed to get a job. i'm not that old at 41 but i remember a time if you walked in the door asking about the job wanted sign in the window they would throw you into the deep end of the pool and see if you could swim or not right on the spot.
