Title: Iran Fires Missile Inside 1 mile from USS Harry S Truman

This is a sign of things to come. Good thing we signed a treaty with Iran.

Why isn't the launching site a burning pile of debris by now?  This is belligerent and threatening.

With  Reagan or either Bush in charge, and maybe even with Slick Willie, the launch site would probably be a pile of rubble.

Because the ship was never in danger. We didn't flinch at their obvious provocative punch. Those in charge were smart enough not to start a huge war over nothing. Thankfully, we have smart people in charge and didn't over react.

How do you know that?  What is the MOA that would have closed that 1,500 yards into 0 yards off target?

This was obviously provocative and meant to rattle the U.S. a bit, but the article did say that the Iranians announced their intentions over maritime radio. I'm sure the captain of the carrier thought there was no immediate danger to his ship or those escorting him or he would've acted to protect everyone. The last thing we need is for an incident to occur in the Straight of Hormuz and then the Iranians shut it down, causing a potential war. The Iranians want to be provocative and let everyone know they're a power within the region, they don't want to start WWIII.

Exactly! I trust the judgement of the commander of that battle group. He had warning, he assessed the risk and took the correct action. It is quite possible that those of us in our armchairs have no idea of the defensive capabilities they actually have. It could be that whatever missile the Iranians fired, we could easily destroy. We let them have their fun, feel like bad asses in their own backyard and a  war was not started. A cool headed response in a tricky part of the world.

A better question might be, why are we sailing around in front of their military exercises in the first place? I would suggest we are there on purpose to get a look at what they have and how they use it. If we don't want to be a potential target, don't stand within range.

yeah, the USN uses a carrier group for intelligence gathering.

good grief

There you go. Then how can anyone complain about a missile flying overhead during a live fire exercise?

The carrier was headed to the Persian Gulf as part of its mission, I doubt we're going to stop our mission so that Iran can make provocations. That might send a message we don't want to (such as acknowledging that Iran can control the Straight of Hormuz, a dangerous precedent to set, in my opinion).

Why not? The Russians still fly aircraft near other country's airspaces, forcing them to launch intercept aircraft to protect their airspace, partly to assess their response. While I don't think the mission of the carrier was specifically intelligence gathering, it's not as if we weren't watching what they were doing and vice versa.

Reactivate and modernize the SR-71.  Just because we can.

Agreed. We obviously aren't getting covert intelligence in the ME, and I suspect the bad players know when our satellites are overhead. So basically we are blind, and our foreign policy and war fighting efforts reflect that.

That would be incredibly difficult.  Not only would they need to refurb the blackbirds, but all the tankers have been retrofitted to remove the isolated tankage that is required to operate them.

So take some $$$ from the Choom Gang, and apply it to that program.  If we can put the New Jersey back in action for the first Gulf War, we can do that.  Oh, wait, we actually had an American as President then.  Never mind.

You realize the tankers you're talking about are 50's vintage planes?  Not a simple operation to screw with the plumbing of the fuel system...again.
