"A “Marxist” “collectivist” “worker-run” restaurant in Grand Rapids, Michigan, closed its doors this week after customers complained that they could no longer tolerate the bizarre hours, high prices and long lines.
The Garden Diner and Cafe—previously known as the Bartertown Diner—featured a vegan, vegetarian and raw food menu that had met with significant national acclaim. But the restaurant’s business model, which did not allow for bosses or managers, promised a “living wage” to all employees and a strong union, did not allow the restaurant to make enough profit to stay in business.

Gee, with that business model it's hard to figure out why it failed................ :o

Obviously it was all those racist Michiganders that did it.

Rich people took all their money.

Standing in line for food is very Marxist.
We had a restaurant like that in a city near me. But there were no prices. You paid "whatever you can."
Lasted maybe two months.

At my church we switched from a set fee based model for paying for things like meals and such as gatherings to a donate what you can model. In analyzing the results over several years of data we found we were getting more money then before. So maybe it's not the model but the population that uses the model that is the issue.

That's not really a fair comparison. You would assume that your fellow church members are people of higher than average honesty and integrity. You would assume fellow church members would have a higher respect for each other. And the fact that they mostly know each other, or people that the others know, they would be less likely to get greedy with them or to cheat them.
When you open such a venture to the general population, you get all the dregs of society (along with the good people), but the lack of commonality brings out the greed in people.

Communism doesn't work. It goes against HUMAN NATURE. Lines for toilet paper, potatoes, bread, and all staples are the norm.
Utopia doesn't work. It goes against HUMAN NATURE. People don't want UTOPIA, they want to matter.
