So are you a constitutional literalist, with the opinion -- contrary to Court precedent -- that the establishment clause only prohibits direct legislation establishing a State religion?
You weren't asking me, but I would answer that question in the affirmative.
And I am an atheist.  As long as the government doesn't require me to profess to believing in any religion, I am good with with it.

Interesting thing on FB today.  Took part in a conversation, another one started by my friend from the Raleigh Durham area.  He starts three or four anti-Trump rants a day.  Suddenly I get a PM from one of his friends that is part of the exchanges.  He's calling me out for saying something he says I directed at him.  Funny thing is, I never directed a response at him at all. I went back over the whole chain, nothing.  After I've checked for the third time I'm ready to respond to him and lo and behold he's deleted the PM.  Didn't even bother to apologize for calling me out for nothing.
Some people actively seek a fight, but only when shrouded in anonymity or under the pretense that they never have to meet their counterpart(s). For that reason, and because my profile can and does get monitored by my employer, I veer away from engaging in political or controversial threads.

Facebook is a good way for me to keep tabs on friends and family. And to play the drinking game, "what's so-and-so drama queen up to now?"

popular vote, electoral college, doesn't really matter.

What we need is leadership from someone is honest and can inspire the population (two characteristics completely lacking from the democrats this past election).

The polling was skewed by a media who wanted Hillary to win.  The various polling outfits deliberately produced polls that showed Hillary winning and a few were just outlandish.  The reliable polls such as IBD showed what was really happening but was ignored, because it showed what was happening.

The so called snap polls online were dissed by the MSM as "unreliable" since most were showing Trump more favorable than Hillary, whereas in reality they were a good measure of sentiment because more people were using social media and the Internet for their news source since the MSM bias was so blatant.

Then in Trump's favor we had the silent majority who were sick and tired of BHO and the progressives who really wanted change, but just remained quiet until Election Day.

Trump's message was clear, Jobs and America First.  He was also a relentless campaigner holding events that outnumbered the Clinton events almost two to one.  And his events drew thousands while the Clinton events struggled to draw hundreds.

The VP choice I feel also helped Trump.  Mike Pense is a rock solid, well spoken family man who complemented Trump.  Tim Kaine doesn't speak well, came off rude in the VP debate and offered very little to the Clinton campaign.

And the reality. Hillary was probably the worse candidate to run. 30 plus years in Washington and enough baggage to fill a freight train.  A woman whose entire adult life has been plagued in scandal after scandal.  A political life of no achievements.  She conveyed an attitude that the presidency was hers, it was owed to her and she was destined to be the first female president.  She also was very cold, spoke in lawyer terms and could not connect with people. Her speaking style was shrill and downright annoying. Even her own campaign was trying to figure out how to make her "more human". The one defining moment was her "basket of deplorables" speech in which she told Americans how she really felt about them.

Clinton's campaign strategy was "run the clock out". They had felt she was the obvious winner so all she really had to do was wait until Election Day, and win.  The campaign kept her hidden using the strategy the less seen and heard from her would limit damage in the media.  Again, the believed their own MSM tripe as fact, which in the end would prove fatal.

Trump has redefined campaigning and redefined how polling will be conducted in the future.  The Fourth Estate is no longer relative in campaigns and will become even less so in the next round.  The Internet has now positioned itself as the "Fifth Estate" and will play even a greater roll in coming elections.

And finally, for all of Hillary's excuses for losing.  It was not the Russians, it was not the "Alt Right", it was not an ancient electoral college, it was not "fake news".  It was a badly flawed candidate backed by a disfunctional political party ran by incompetent stooges, supported by a flawed and biased media.

No need for Russians to solicit information--they just steal it.

Or set up a trap, like a phishing scheme for some dumbass campaign manager to fall for.

The hardest thing for democrats to accept is that their party has become a freak show.

The only true thing I've seen you write.

Though the freak show started with the induction of the PC culture of the 1990's.

Why do we even have a popular vote for President or the Senate?  Wasn't too long ago that Senators were appointed, why not go back to the old way since our founding fathers wanted it that way?

Repeal the 17th amendment?  Sure, absolutely!  Need a constitutional convention first.

Our constitution doesn't have any provisions for a popular vote for president, never has.  The popular vote for president is at the state level, not federal.  Each state could, if they wanted, abolish the popular vote for President.

I live 200 miles from the nearest urban area. Trump voters nearby known to me, based on discussions with them:

Neighbor who is a doctor
Neighbor who is a policeman
Neighbor who is a contractor and builds homes in my neighborhood
Relative who is a massage therapist
My mom who oversees her leased Concord grape vineyard
Mom's lessee, who farms her vineyard and several of his own
My brother (retired machinist) and sister-in-law (an accountant)
My aunt (retired bank manager)
My husband and his software engineer work group (six guys) plus a QA engineer
Friend who is a tech editor

I do think the people have spoken, and they echo the sentiment, "Spread my work ethic, not my wealth."

Come on folks, go easy on Witmo, most of the other liberals who came here when they thought Hillary was a shoe in  are hiding in their safe space with their tails between their legs.  At least Witmo has some balls to come out and argue his points.

I agree with much of what you say.  I wouldn't say Hillary was incompetent but rather she was toxic to voters.  She still won more than 2M votes more than DT.  What does it say about us electing someone who put his foot in his mouth daily.  It says many hated HRC more.  Does this equal a popular mandate, I don't think so.  My fingers are crossed that it works out but right now its still a coin flip.

Hillary won the popular vote solely in areas that are solid Democrat/liberal/progressive brainwashed.  L.A. , and NYC metro areas.  Our system rightly mitigates against large swathes of indoctrinated controlling the country.  However, as a country we are in crisis.  Metro areas have grown, are always Democrat, and are controlling entire states.

We are NOT a Democracy.  We are a Representative Constitutional Republic.  The Dems need to get over the popular vote, and MOB RULE.  Trump won 3,084 out of 3,141 counties.  Hillary won 57.

I am certain (where once I was suspicious) that Donald Trump will not govern like a Republican.
I am also certain that Donald Trump will not govern like a Democrat.
I am certain that Donald Trump will govern like a businessman.
That gives me hope.
Like another poster, anyone Graham and McCain - and - Pelosi, McCaskill and Schumer hate is usually good by me.

I get that people, myself included, wished there were choices other than HRC and DT to choose from at this last election.  Whether one or the other was worse is debatable but most agree, both sucked.  Now that DT has won, I hope people hold him to the same standards they would say HRC failed to uphold.  When he lies, call him on it.  When he "spins" the truth, see it for what it is.  My problem with die hard DT supporters is that they ignore anything negative and blame HRC or the media for fomenting undue criticism.  I have seen little so far that has made me less nervous but I am hopeful.

I like Trumps appointments to his cabinet so far.  Especially EPA.  He is doing exactly what he promised during his campaign.  The fact that Republicans McCain, and Graham are against him warms my heart.

Hillary, like Obama is not a leader/manager.  They can't run anything but only talk in obscure progressive/liberal/communist ideals.  Broad policies of hope, and change.  NO NUTS AND BOLTS on how to improve the important factors in our lives.  Trump is a DOER.  Just watch.
