Title: Hurricane Michael
Post by: Number7 on October 10, 2018, 11:52:37 AM
Hey,

Any folks in trouble due to hurricane Michael can come toward Orlando.

There are thousands of available hotel rooms and the prices are all off season.

Stay safe out there. It looks awful.

We've got localized flooding and very high tides in Tampa Bay, nowhere near landfall. Can't imagine the Pensacola area.

Get out of the way of that thing if you can.  And get your aircraft out of there.  GA aircraft do not belong in hurricanes.  I've been told that insurance companies will reimburse for folks in the path of hurricanes to relocate their aircraft.  Sweet deal, I'd take it.

It's likely very congested. What I've seen on West FL news send to indicate Panama City Beach was spared the worst of it. Not sure, though.

I may have been wrong. Video now coming out of Panama City Beach does not look good.

Just heard the TV stations are out, power too of course, they are speculating cell towers down. No one in the family can reach him.

Latest track takes the center of the remnants about 5 miles south of me near Raleigh.  Don't expect any trouble.

Anyone flying Operation Airlift this weekend?  Son has his Eagle ceremony Saturday or I'd be trying.

I am in Raleigh right now.

Looks like a pretty big mess on the coast.  The storm surge was enormous, I'm guessing at least 12' and probably much more.  I suspect anything that is near the coast is pretty much wrecked.

I was watching the local airports.  Apalachicola went offline with gusts around 77 when the eye was about 40 miles away.  Tyndall went down with gusts reporting 111 kts or 127 mph.  That was about 30 miles away.

Congrats to your son!  That is a big deal.

My sister took the brunt of Michael as the eye passed over their house.  It is a new house built to new codes, but not CAt 5 codes.  And they are on the water, right across from the Gulf.

I will be loading up the truck with my generator, tarps, food and water, gas cans and other supplies and head over there as soon as I hear they are back and what they need.  I"d fly the Bo, but the truck can haul a whole lot more needed supplies, and get closer to their house.

How did the house fare? Lots of damage? Cat 4/5 is brutal.

Thank you all.  It's great to get done.

Wish I could also help out with the storm.

In Raleigh, it's really quiet.  I know it's going to be a windy day, but right now there's barely a breeze and just a little rain.

Don't know yet.  They evacuated to Atlanta and can't get hold of anyone down there.  Cell towers, land lines and of course power are down.  They said residents are not allowed to return yet.  But they suspect the worst and that the house is gone (while hoping for the best).  Tyndall AFB is on the other side of St. Andrews Sound from their house and while Tyndall got severe damage, I haven't heard that they were flooded, so they may have avoided the storm surge bullet.

All we got was little wind and some rain here in the ATL. It's all a memory now.

Just returned from an errand around Glenwood Ave. inside the belt line. A band went through that made me pull off the road it was so intense but 5 blocks over my sister said there was nothing. It passed in two minutes and I went on my way. Now it's just drizzling. Not much traffic about.

The radar shows more heading this way.

We cannot get any word from my niece's Dad (my ex brother in law). His house is in Lynn Haven about 3 blocks from the water.  He did not evacuate, his dad worked for the power company and his mom was a nurse, they always rode out hurricanes so they could be on site to assist and I guess he grew up that's what you do but I don't think they ever had one this bad. He's ex military I'm thinking he's probably out helping whomever wherever right now. His house is brick hopefully stayed standing and he's okay.

I just got a Flash Flood alert on my phone but I'm in for the day.  It shouldn't be too bad here.  Thanks!

Looking at the incredible destruction of Mexico Beach, I can’t help but wonder how much of that was due to poor construction habits instead of storm ferocity.

There are a lot of very crooked builders in Florida, just as there are a lot of incompetent and corrupt building inspectors.

Mexico City Beach has had many buildings left from the '50s and '60s, prior to any modern hurricane building codes.  New construction has been slowed by design in order to maintain their lifestyle.  Those buildings would probably have been blown away with a class 2 or 3 hurricane, although not as spectacularly.

Who's in NC? My elderly grandmother is in High Point, and we can't get through to her. my uncle was on the phone with her at 5 p.m., and she said trees were falling down in her yard, then the phone went dead. This was last night at 5 p.m. and we haven't been able to reach her since.

Does she only have a land line? Did a tree just take down the line to her house?

You can look up her property, look up the owners of her neighbors, try to find their info and try to call them.

Real time aerial:

I zoomed in to my relative's house, it is intact, his roof is there, no tree on the house, but all the trees are down.  I'm thinking he stayed inside and he is fine.

I used that link earlier to check my sisters house.  It looks like she weathered the storm fairly well too.  Her Lanai is gone and she has some roof shingles missing.  That is all we can tell from the picture, but at least the house is in the same place it used to be.  I can't see her outdoor generator, but that may just be due to the resolution.  It is not exactly real time.  The pic was taken yesterday.

Mom got through to the neighbor who went to check on her. She's ok. She had turned off her cell phone to conserve the battery. And trees knocked out the landline phone line. All is well, appreciate the help.

Yet none of you volunteered to fly into the hurricanes for data collection with your planes.  Wusses.

I would have, but we don’t fly the PT-26’s wooden prop in the rain due to possible delamination.  Plus, with a cruise of 105 mph, I don’t like flying backwards. It makes me dizzy.

My niece wants to drive INTO ground zero because she hasn't heard from her Dad. The whole family's trying to talk her out of it. Good Lord, the last thing her Dad wants is to have her come there and be one more person to take care of.

We heard from someone who made it out, says it's a war zone, looting, someone's already been killed over food, THIS IS A RUMOR I HEARD!!  IT IS NOT CONFIRMED.  No gas, any supplies making it in are being stolen at gunpoint.

I'm not even sure I should pass this along, I don't know if it's true.

My sister and brother in law live at Ground Zero.  They evacuated to Atlanta, but he returned today.  He said it is unbelievable; not a tree or power pole standing.  All the old house and gas stations are just gone.

But he finally made it to his house and it was still standing.  There is a good bit of roof damage.  The AC unit has been moved and shifted.  The boat dock is toast.  The Lanai is gone.  And his brand new whole house generator doesn't work.

All in all, he feels very lucky.  The house is in the same place he left it.  I will probably drive over there Monday to bring him supplies and help with temporary repairs, like putting a tarp on the roof.

The police and sheriff's office have been inundated with calls because people can't get through to their relatives that chose to ride it out.  Of course they can't get through. No telephone, except for a little spotty cell service and no power.

My insurance agency insures a couple of properties in that area. A few commercial buildings, and a waterfront motel, both in Panama City Beach. We got photos today. The commercial buildings are total losses. One of them was solid concrete block and is now rubble. We can't get through to the owners of the motel, but we went ahead and put the insurance carriers on notice that it's likely to be something between bad and a total loss.

Finally today for the first time my sister's ex got a voice call through. He's been clearing roads with his chainsaw and using water from his swimming pool to wash things and bathe. She said he sounded like he was having fun. He said Trump was two blocks from his house passing out water.
