Other interesting trivia I found on SCOTUS justices, one in particular:

So I looked up the page on him in wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_F._Byrnes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_F._Byrnes)) to see how he came to be a lawyer and then a judge. Among other things it said "At 14, Byrnes left St. Patrick's Catholic School to work in a law office, and became a court stenographer. Notably, he transcribed the 1903 trial of South Carolina Lieutenant Governor James H. Tillman (nephew of Senator and former governor "Pitchfork Ben" Tillman), for murdering a newspaper editor."
Murdering a newspaper editor!? So on looking up James H. Tillman I see "In 1903 he fatally shot journalist Narciso Gener Gonzales, co-founder of Columbia newspaper The State, and was acquitted of murder in a trial that gained national coverage."
So then I look up Narciso Gener Gonzales and find:
"Gonzales was shot on January 15, 1903, by South Carolina Lieutenant Governor James H. Tillman, the nephew of Ben Tillman, and died four days later. Gonzales had waged a veritable crusade against Tillman's personal failings in his newspaper that helped to ensure Tillman's defeat in the 1902 South Carolina gubernatorial race. Tillman had shot Gonzales in broad daylight in the presence of many eyewitnesses but was acquitted, ostensibly on a shaky self-defense theory but really because the jury believed Tillman to have been right in taking justice into his own hands. The assassination effectively ended Jim Tillman's political future and provided an opening for Coleman Livingston Blease to become the next political leader in the state."
