Lucifer:
Odd, I've never heard ATC ever tell aircraft where they will be diverted to.  I have heard ATC say " Airport is closed, say intentions".

invflatspin:
That's what the man said. I grabbed my logbook. Feb 22, 1982 @ approx 4:40PM. I will presume that jet traffic would go to Burbank and piston to Whiteman. I'm sure if someone wanted another destination, they could request it on contact. I'm also guessing that aircraft inbound for Van Nuys but further out would be able to prep the appr for either airport of their choice, or an alternate to be determined later. Maybe the tapes are avail. Maybe not...

You're flying along, ahead of the plane, got your nav all figured out, comms are going smooth and then someone tosses a wrench in the whole thing. I heard this once as I was on the G/S in bumpy solid IMC: "Attention all aircraft, Van Nuys airport is closed until further notice. Aircraft will be diverted to Burbank, or Whiteman." A few seconds later they called me and gave instructions to go missed, and then contact departure for my alternate. So I got it all sorted out, called back on the missed appr point, and then dep calls back and says; "Van Nuys just re-opened if you want to divert back there." Sigh,,,,

I've heard others say that partial panel was difficult. I never had an issue with that, because most of the time I was in training I never got to see the AH, it was always 'inop' for some reason right after passing 600'. Didn't bother me much.

I swear I use the TC more than the AH. PP, meh.

I started in an Aeronca. It had a T&B with a venturi tube. AH was new-fangled for the hoity-toity in a Cessna 190 or Bonanza planes.

How is it now?
