Title: reading old threads...
Post by: President-Elect Bob Noel on July 07, 2019, 09:53:24 AM
I was perusing old threads and noted one thread were a poster was adamant that cellphones shouldn't be allowed to work in moving vehicles.  He (she?) didn't seem to understand that there are many valid uses of a cellphone in a moving vehicle (e.g., passengers).

I find it strange that a forum with, presumably, many instrument-rated pilots, so many posters don't understand how people can multi-task.

oh, btw, if you were to look at the NHTSA data for motor vehicle accident rates, and compare accident rates from the time before cellphone to the accident rates once cellphones became ubiquitous, you might be surprised to see that the accident rates remained constant (or dipped slightly) over that time period.

People are idiots.

I use my cell to navigate. I have a hands free blue tooth so if someone calls me I can answer but I don't place calls while driving. I certainly don't text while moving. But all the "Don't text and drive" signs on the highways here in Texas certainly distract me and take my eyes off the road and will probably end up causing me to crash.

I just put my Tesla on autopilot so I can do whatever I want. It's a great tool that allows me to surf the web and text with friends all while eating a veggie burger and sipping on my soy latte.

(And for Anthony, it's still 100% humor, or should I say sarcasm ;))

I get it!  :)

My friend has a new Chevy Silverado, limited edition.  It probably cost him over $75K (same guy with the 2004 Bo).  It is a rolling technology platform, with Wi-Fi and every display known to man.  but he's into that stuff as he has an IT business.   His plane is the same way, G1000, etc.

NOBODY can multi-task with the efficiency it takes to drive and text simultaneously.  The difference between airplanes and cars is that in an airplane there are generally nobody within 3 miles of you for you to sideswipe, tailgate or head-on crash with.  In a car, you are frequently within 3 feet of another car.

There used to be a lot more alcohol induced accidents.  If you are correct, then I suspect we just traded one mass murder technique for another.

But I do agree that there are legitimate uses for a cell phone in a car, as Rush pointed out.
