Fox just predicted Dem's will take the House but not making specifics.

That is terrible news if it plays out that way.

Interesting results so far.

If Gillum and Nelson both fail in FL, as it appears is not just possible but likely that is a good indicator - still lots to go though.

$100K?  Buy a Yak and fly it for 5 years.

Learn formation, maybe aerobatics, care for a big round engine - it's fun.

Local News radio reporting that Republican's outpacing Democrats in early and mail-in voters here in SoCal.....Now D's still outnumber R's in total registration, but R + Independent is substantially outnumbering D in early/mail votes.

Anecdotal but interesting - they are also reporting an expected 68% turnout.

I wonder if Rome was like this...that people knew what was happening, but those bent on selfishness didn't care.
funny you ask this, as I have been thinking on this subject a lot as we roll into today's midterms - overall, the Nation is substantially better off than it was 2 years ago, 6, 8, 10 even - yet there are a large number of people who will, for reasons good, bad or indifferent, choose to change the makeup of your government which can only result in a change in direction which will yield a slowing of this progress at best, a complete course reversal at worst.

I wonder how can anyone knowingly vote against their own interests, but then you look at the overwhelming presence of liberalism in pop-culture; primary, secondary and higher education; 90-ish percent of the media; and throughout the agencies and offices at a national state and local level and sometimes it is amazing anyone votes for conservatives at all.

To watch the lamestream media over the past month you would think anyone who does not want to see Trump ded is a full-on racist, misogynist, homophobic nazi bigot demon from the planet Antares here to give cigarettes to your babies - in the face of that constant vitriolic onslaught it is no wonder we see the actual political violence we are witnessing - I mean if a normal person had a chance to stop Hitler wouldn't they do it?

Of course Trump isn't Hitler, the half of the country that supported Trump are not nazi's or racists, but if people think that we are, what is to stop them from acting out?

I am cautiously optimistic for today but we will have to really turn out to overcome the margin of fraud.

Spin Zone / Re: I voted
« on: November 06, 2018, 08:36:20 AM »
So early voted last night, was an interesting exercise as most of the ballot initiatives were deceptively worded.

Voted against all incumbent judges, voted against all increases in government oversight/influence/control, voted against all bond issues, voted against all increased cost of government issues except one that would guarantee disability to law enforcement who are diagnosed with PTSD/mental illness following an on the job injury (I suspect it will be abused some but it is still the right thing to do IMO).

After I got home my 22yr old daughter was filling out her sample ballot since she will vote today, and she asks me how I voted on a particular ballot initiative, I asked which one, she said the pension one - we literally had a ballot initiative where we had to tell the city to only use pension funds for pensions, I ranted - she laughed, I laughed, my wife laughed, then we sighed....

Kommiefornia indeed.

I rode in an elevator with 2 poll workers after I early voted last night, one said they already had 28% of the eligible votes in as mail-in, they had never seen that - both were excited.

Now that bothers me because I am convinced, based on observation while there, that that office is no doubt almost entirely filled with folks of a single political persuasion and I don't trust them any further than I could throw the building, but it is interesting.

Lots of people in line to vote, I was in the last 10 or so allowed in.

Saw a lot of what appeared to be no registration provisional voters (based on what they were saying, asking for, being told) which is worrisome to me.  If you can still register and vote, even if you missed the registration deadline, why have any rules at all?

Did have a fun conversation with a young black woman, she asked me if she would need her ID to vote and I jokingly said no, you only need it to get here and then get home, buy alcohol or do almost everything else - she was surprised by that, not my joke but that she did not need ID.

That suggested to me she was not fully informed/prepared to vote but I could admittedly be way off on that, but it again is worrisome to me that folks will show up to vote who don't actually understand the system or follow the rules/law.  When I told her they can't ask for ID I did see a glimmer of worry/cponcern in her face as I think she worked through the logic of how that does not give one a sense of confidence in the security of the vote and I took that as hopeful.

But, I did my part and no matter how today turns out I earned my bitching/crowing rights.

I'm sorry to do this, but I have to call you out on the connection between the events of the 60s unrest and anything remotely associated with the NSDAP. I lived through it as a youth in SoCal, and have studied extensively the background of the rise of Nazi Germany due to my distant heritage. In short - there is NO connection, even at its most culturally significant point. The 60s movement in the US was a direct result of some well-defined changes in social policy that people were fed up with. Very real, and very ugly things happened in the mid-60s starting with the execution of JFK and ending with the resignation of Nixon(yes, I know that was in 74). These two seminal events sort of bookend 'the 60s' and the social unrest was completely justified for many reasons. Murders of JFK, Bobby Kennedy, MLK, Watts riots, integration of southern schools, FBI secret investigations, Kent State massacre, and to cap it all off - an unjust and unjustifiable war in Vietnam. We were  mad as hell, and weren't going to take it anymore(rent the movie). I don't blame the kids, and plenty of adults for the social unrest and actual violence against the state from about 1967-1974. It was a decade of one shit sandwich after another, and if not for the resignation of the president, and Ford following through on our exit from Vietnam, things were going to get even worse.

Take this in juxtaposition for the top-down totalitarian control of the NSDAP in Germany, where the state was everything, and all were coordinated through many state-run outlets just is not supportable. Yes, Germany had some legitimate gripes about the disarmament treaty of Versailles and they were struggling with economic stagnation in the 30s, but so was the US, and many other countries as we went through a world recession. Germany chose Naziism because it was pressed on them, not because it was the natural and selective choice of the proletariat. The majority of Germans never actually joined the Nazi party, but they still controlled all aspects of life in Germany, and state run media was the only word allowed. This is completely opposite the reaction of the people of late 60s US.

There is no 'and' about it. The two are completely separate and completely anathema in message and ideology.
I was not suggesting that the hippies were Nazi's, that is why I said 'some kind of mix-up between', BUT the violence of the 60's was inexcusable, PERIOD.  Actual assassinations, attacks on returning vet's, Kent State, none of it, PERIOD.

That said, I don't believe for a minute that the unrest of the 60's was purely organic and not organized, the structures we see uncovered today existed back then, just better hidden.  And I disagree, the organizers utilized the exact same methods to stoke the anger you saw in the 60's, as was used in the late 30's, and as is being used now - the playbook is old and tattered but undeniably effective.

While I generally reject Godwin's law (and no, the OP is not invoking Godwin's law) - there is little arguing that current events are a mix-up of something between the unrest of the 60's and the events that led to the rise of the National Socialist Worker's Party in pre-war Germany.

They are and have been acting like petulant children but the violence has been ramping up for some time - people know and are sensitivie to this, but the media gatekeepers are doing a good job of hiding the interconnection between the radical alt-left government media complex and the radical alt left thugs, and then deflecting to the rare and random right wing nut job - Goebbels would be proud.

I do think people in general are waking up to this - and it is due in no small part to Trump's tweeting and his communication savvy at his rallies - he ensures that the message gets out by, I think, deliberately provoking the sanctimonious self-righteous media who in trying to castigate him only ensure that more people actually see/hear his messaging and can then decide for themselves if he really was trying to publicly ask his secret Russian handlers to steal Hillary's e-mails, or if he was joking but pointing out she had refused to turn over a shit ton of e-mails then claimed they were 'lost'.

I am concerned about this election but thinking back to the polling going into 2016 we still could see just the opposite of what has been predicted.

Keep your powder dry.

My sure to be sainted father reposted this on Facebook:

"Charles Manson never murdered anyone. He just held rallies where he encouraged his followers to be violent."

I responded as follows:
"This is exactly right, I agree the time is long passed for all people of good conscious to oppose dog whistles inciting political violence, so I join the OP and call on Maxine Waters, Hillary Clinton, Cory Booker, Eric Holder, Kathy Griffin, Cher, Rosie O'Donnell, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, John Brennan, Jeff Zucker, Jim Acosta, Nancy Pelosi, Rachel Maddow, Joe Scarborough, Misha Brzinsky, Joy Behar, Whoopie Golberg, Nancy Wasserman Schultz, Joe Biden, Chuck Schumer, the NYT Op/Ed Page, the Shakespeare in the Park production that portrayed the assassination of Trump, Madonna, Johnny Depp, Black Lives Matter, ANTIFA, George Soros, and their enablers at NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC - ALL OF WHOM HAVE BEEN NONSTOP INCITING TO VIOLENCE FOR ALMOST 3 YEARS NOW to stop the divisive rhetoric that has ACTUALLY incited people to actually shoot Republicans, to actually firebomb Republican Campaign Offices, to actually assault Republicans eating dinner, watching movies or trying to leave their home - to actually burn vehicles with pro Trump bumper stickers, to actually attack people on the right simply for trying to exercise their right to free speech on college campuses across the fruited plains - I agree, it is high time for this nonsense to stop - there is no place in the United States for political violence, on ANY side."
