Title: New Certified Private Pilot
Post by: EppyGA - White Christian Domestic Terrorist on March 31, 2018, 02:06:58 AM
In 2015 EAA 690 launched a Youth Build Program designed to give youth an opportunity to work on aircraft projects and learn about airplanes and aviation as well as how to use tools and construction techniques.

In May of 2016 a young man by the name of Jeremy Welch began attending our build program. Jeremy had a goal of becoming a pilot and he set out a plan to do just that.  His first goal was to solo on his 16th birthday. He missed that one by only two days and soloed on April 1st, 2017, the morning of our chapter pancake breakfast.
Over the next year Jeremy methodically checked off his intermediate goals along the way to his scheduled check ride date of March 30th, 2018, Jeremy's 17th birthday.

I am proud to say that Jeremy has achieved that goal and is the chapter's first Certificated Private Pilot to come out of our build program.  We do want to thank the AeroVentures Flying Club for giving us the opportunity to rent their Cessna 150 for our youth and special thanks to John Post, Fred Huppertz and other CFIs in the club for donating their time and effort to help Jeremy achieve his goal.

The first picture is Jeremy with his parents and John Post after his solo. The second picture is Jeremy along with his DPE after his successful check ride.

That's great.  We hear of fewer, and fewer of these types of accomplishments.  At least I perceive it that way.  Huge accomplishment for that kid.

We have five that are flying, four of them soloed last year.  I have another that should take his check ride fairly soon.  He is in the NRTOC program and has already been accepted into the Naval Aviator program.  One of our youth soloed in 4.5 hours.

That is wonderful!

As you may recall, my husband (our EAA prez)  was quite impressed with the video of your Youth Build program. He felt strongly that it was something our club might wish to do.

In the last year, he has found a core group of members interested, one member provided dedicated hangar space, and tax, insurance and legal issues are being sorted out.  If it comes to pass, it will be very exciting and so good for the members and kids.

He might contact you as things progress!

I love it when good things multiply. 😊

So this is going to be an unusual one here, but I haven't been able to find any information despite searching the web for weeks now.

Did this ever get off the ground?

Thought I'd post a quick update.  We had three new private pilots this year.  One is in the Navy now and training at the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station in the Texan T6B.  Our first PPL flew 20 Young Eagles for the chapter this year, since April.  Our third new PPL is ready to fly Young Eagles and has gotten a recommendation from his Congressman for the Air Force Academy.

That’s great news, Randy. One of the main benefits to the youth is having a lot of mentors and encouragers on scene.

Our chapter is working on it. The core interest within the group is there, meetings have been held, a partially completed plane has been offered and is being considered, connections have been made with a home schooling coordinator (who arranged for a dozen or so Young Eagles flights) and a local educator.

The key is going to be strong leadership, and I haven’t got a true sense of that yet. My husband declined a fourth term as president and seems to be moving into some kind of Education Center leadership role. But I’m not sure he’s the primary lead. He won’t answer that question directly, so that probably means he is.

I've begun to focus on the school systems to see if I can get some traction getting them to adopt any aviation focused curriculum and get them into the Eagles Nest project.

Yesterday the group moved a donated, partially completed Fergy II to the EAA Education Center hangar.

I have suggested  to my husband that he contact The Experienced Epster for a chat, but ... men!!!

 :)

He has talked a little bit with a chapter in Puyallup that has built five planes in their youth program, though.

Awesome news Becky!!  I'm sure he'll figure it out. More than anything he needs to make sure the chapter is covered insurance wise in case a kid decides to cut off a finger or something.

I just got done talking with a young pre-med student who is very interested in getting into GA. I am glad to take on the mantle of mentor.

And chase them screaming into the night?  :)

Just kidding.

Remember, if the engine is running rough pull the little red knob all the way back, and the noise will go away.

Offered him a discovery flight on the next nice day.  I really shouldn't, it could be perceived as a conflict of interest.

That’s okay, you can hate yourself for it later.

Are there any additional new student starts?

Yes, at least one I am aware of.  We are also working on a referral for the EAA Ray Scholarship.  Our coordinator for that has been dragging her feet. I am not happy reading articles all the time about this Ray Scholarship per son or that Ray Scholarship person having soloed and we have yet to refer one.
Our coordinator became focused on one young lady and has been having issues getting her moving forward. At a BOD meeting we tried to tell the coordinator that there are other candidates she should be talking to, but she refuses to do that.

I recently sent an email out to our build program asking about their intentions.  Tow or three of them indicated they will be starting training in the near future.
