Title: So, Who's Going to Oshkosh?
Post by: nddons on July 14, 2016, 12:12:00 PM
I thought I'd start a thread to see who is going to be up at EAA AirVenture this year.

You may want to post the days you'll be up there, what you are flying if you are flying in, and what you will be doing when there.

It would be nice if you posted your first name  as well as your PS name.

Also, we can PM each other if you want to share cell phone numbers to get together.

Stan (nddons) will be there from Saturday, 7/23 through Sunday, 7/31. I'll be staying either in Warbirds camping, or Camp Scholler.

I work Flightline Ops, marshaling planes from the runways to the taxiways.  Be sure to give your marshalers a kind wave when you pass by. We probably have been standing there for 3-6 hours and that friendly stuff makes a difference. Of course if you're flying a Cirrus, we know you're too cool to wave.

Good idea. Practice some go-arounds as well.

In the last couple of years I have seen at least 4 planes nearly stall on the base to final turn to 27. You could tell because of how slow they were going, and the subsequent gunning of the engine.  And last year a Piper Malibu bought the farm on that turn. Check out the NTSB report before you fly in. It's instructional. The crash happened on 7/22/15. The bank angle was 60 degrees when it hit wing low. He elected to not do a go-around.

Remember, if you're cleared to land on the orange dot (1,000 ft past the displaced threshold) and don't think you can make it, GO AROUND.  (FYI the green dot is 2,509 past the displaced threshold.)

ATC does a good job of calling your crosswind turn to get back into the pattern.

Yeah, I've gone around at the Show before.   I've never found it to be a thing, but I've never landed it in a complex single either.  Still, keeping uproar airspeed is basic airmanship, I hope I'm good enough to do it despite the distractions.  One good thing is sans power and in a slip the Mooney will come down like nobody's business.  Bad thing is it will be a very firm arrival if I don't abate the sink in time.  BTDT.

We are making a trip from Florida to Canada around that time.  We think we may be in the area on Sunday/Monday and might want to stop in for the day.  I know we won't get to see much in that time, and I'm not even sure if flying in and out the same day is feasible or possible.

Is there a best time of day, or best day to do this?  I"m hoping it will be to fly in on Monday AM.

But the Bonanza really doesn't like to fly slow, so that worries me a little.

The Bo should not be a problem. I think the NOTAM has you flying the Fisk arrival at 90 kts.  Lots of Bonanzas come in, and there's also a mass arrival of Bos on Saturday I believe.

There's a steady stream of planes coming in on Monday, but it shouldn't be unreasonable at any time.

Well, I was at OSH today volunteering at Warbirds and Flightline Ops. It's getting exciting!  I only noticed two planes on the field - a Navion in Warbirds, and an Ercoupe in Vintage.

Sporty's is in Ohio. Overnight the tube/tire if he doesn't live in Cincinnati, then spend the hour putting it on. Don't even need the A&P. He will need some tools, a jack, a cotter pin and a bit of safety wire.

A one hour job.  Tires and tubes that hard to come by in Ohio?

Got tire, tube, event the little thingies that go on top the jack for Mooneys.  What I don't have include an airplane jack, English measure tools (mine are all metric),and even said cotter pin.  I do have safety wire and pliers for it, believe it or not.  Did change out the oil, filter, and battery, so I'm not entirely helpless.  But I've never changed a tire on anything (I pull wheels, but pay to have tires changed) and the last time I used an inner tube on a tire it was on a Schwinn.  Moreover, I've never jacked up an airplane myself either.

All this said, I've got a mechanic coming over from the neighboring airport early this week, so it sounds like my Oshkosh trip is saved.  I'll be paying careful attention, and I thin I'll have my eyes out of a jack.  I do not intend to be in this position again.

Then again, the lack of mechanical services is forcing me to abandon the airport at which I've been based since the beginning of this century.  I am moving the airplane, just don't quite know where yet.  I've been grounded of three weeks with a simple flat because a mechanic couldn't be bothered to come fix it.  I can only imagine how bad it would be with substantive engine troubles.

Watch the mechanic do this job, then find a used jack.  It's fairly simple operation to perform.

I kind of feel the same way, but you have to remember, this isn't POA.  We only have 159 members and I'll bet that the great majority aren't very active here.  And I also kind of think that most of the active ones aren't really all that much into flying anyway.  They are here for the political discussion and name-calling.

I wonder how many here really are active flyers?

I wouldn't move just because of no mech on field.

My airport used to be vibrant and active.  The capacious tie down area was full, as were the many hangars.  There was a really good maintenance shop, and an active flight school.  There is a restaurant I've heard is quite good but I wouldn't know, since I can't eat anything there.  I used to even purchase their overpriced fuel just to contribute.  I am very, very loyal when treated fairly.

Then came 2008.

The tie down area is gone.  Hangars sit empty or with non-aviation materials.  The guy next to me sold his airplane and keeps his bikes there.  He keeps a skeletal fuselage in case anyone asks.  Flight school is gone.  There is one mechanic who neither answers his phone nor listens to messages and can't even be bothered to fix a flat.

The restaurant where there's nothing to eat is still there.

I am a very active flyer, and I am damn tired of being grounded.  And my airplane goes in for annual next month.  I am half tempted to give it up.  I don't mind the ADSB crap, but the rest of it is really starting to wear me down.

The Mooney mass arrival is only 30 planes this year (compared to 30 Pipers, 35 Cirri, 80 Cessnas, and 120-150 Bonanzas) so I'm sure there's plenty of room for you and Steingar next year.

Excellent!! Other notes- You'll want some talcum powder too. Sprinkle it in the tire for your initial tube inflation. Your A&P will likely show you this. It helps to keep the tube from kinking in the tire when inflated.

Also, for just a tire and tube change, a Mooney can be jacked just for one wheel by inserting a heavy gauge 1" tube, or 1" solid round bar into the gear "knee" (you know where I mean) and using a floor jack, or bottle jack. Just make sure to chock the other wheels and don't try to climb inside the plane or on the wing while it's up. No wing jack is needed if you don't have one. This is a much cheaper option.

I totally get it. If you don't do your own work on the plane, it's sucks to have to go find somebody every time something breaks and let's face it, on the old planes most of us fly, shit breaks all the time!

I am loosing my mojo for flying altogether also, but I guess I'm not ready to give it up yet, so a trip to Oshkosh would help, but long term I'm considering trading the Mooney for a Vans RV. I'm really not a huge fan of the RV and have never salivated to own one, but the numbers add up and I think I can save a significant amount of money as well as not having the government looming over me every time the plane gets a hick up, or wants something new.

We'll see, more research is needed.

I am toying with idea of Great Yak Cross Country Adventure for OSH next year although I really want to get up to Johnson Creek as well.

2018 would mark the 30th anniversary of my first trip to OSH but I haven't been to OSH since '03, LAL since 2007.

Even with the Aux Tank in, it looks like no less than 7 legs and about 14 hours, so 2-days each way before Wx or mechanicals, and probably 400 gallons of fuel and 2.5-3 cases of oil roundtrip.

But what an adventure. Camp under the wing maybe for extra fun.

Definitely a solo gig though.
