Sad story. I’m sure some of the celebrities out there embracing the medical industry in Communist Cuba will step up to pay the hospital bill instead of the doctors and hospitals having to eat the costs.

Michael Moore will get right on that!

And Sean Penn, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, Oprah, Joyless Behar, Woopie, and George Clooney just to name a few.

Communist medical systems notwithstanding, I'm having difficulty understanding how the tumor could have gotten so large without someone deciding to do something about it.

Rationing.  In that utopia the progressives call Cuba while they may have free medical care, it's not on demand. A bureaucrat decides on what cases get priority and why.

Add to that not having the technology to deal with it and the child gets pushed to the bottom.

Also, with no competition (all doctors get paid the same by the State) there is no motivation for the doctors to do the difficult, risky stuff.  And there is no motivation for the "best and brightest" to go into medicine in the fist place.
