Title: Insomnia
Post by: jb1842 on December 18, 2018, 02:29:37 AM
Fuck you, insomnia. Had surgery a few days ago and can't sleep. Just wanted to vent.

Sucks.  I have gotten 6 hours of sleep just 5 times in the past 3 weeks, some nights less than 2. Sucks to either not be able to fall asleep until like 4 am or to wake up at 2 and not get back to sleep.

Have you tried watching CSPAN yet?

If that fails, you can tape mika on pmsnbc and be in a come in seconds.

What do people do for this? I find it worst when I can’t turn off the hamster wheel in my brain that keeps thoughts about politics/the culture/anxiety about the direction of the country, etc. It keeps whirring in my head. And I lie there and mentally compose kick-ass letters to my liberal friends.

Warm organic milk from Jersey cows. About 6 mg of melatonin. Prayer; accepting that literally everything going on in the world is outside my ability to control or influence. No coffee in the afternoon. Exercise. Hot shower before bed, watch something calming and soporific on Netflix, like nature documentaries. But then the wolf chomps the cute little vole and the nasty cycle of Darwinian  thoughts starts again ... >:(

4 capsules of valerian root
6 squirts of "Mercola melatonin spray"
Occasionally 1 Unisom tablet

Then I watch shows on the iPad until I fall asleep.

It takes all that to turn off my hamster wheel. Every. Single. Night.

I always get up and either cook, fold, or write something.  Usually works the anxiety out and if it doesn't, at least I have something yummy to eat, a wonderful Origami model, or something to read.

Yes, eating something too.  I didn't list that but if I don't have a snack that will also keep me from sleeping. I usually have a cup or two of yogurt.

Tried yogurt last night and it made things worse. Think between pain meds, GERD, and not eating a normal diet yet is the big problem. An apple finally calmed me down amd got to sleep 30 minutes before my toddler woke up.

Ugh, pain meds can upset the stomach. Interesting an apple worked for you, apples always upset my stomach, I have no idea why.

Try some carbs, and/or protein like cheese.

No cheese! Already clogged up enough as it is from pain meds. I am craving tacos right now so that is a good sign I'm getting back to normal.

Expecting to sleep 8 hours straight is a fairly recent paradigm.

Open the FAR/AIM to page 1 and begin reading. This should put you to sleep ... but could also be painful.
