In todays world "book deals" are often just a clever way to pay someone off, by offering a huge amount of money for a so-so book.

The advance is supposed to be based on expected royalties.  And it's not paid back if the book doesn't sell.  Quite the scam.  I wonder where the money really comes from.  For normal authors it's paid by the publisher.  For these crooks I bet it's paid to the publisher from somewhere else.  And because it's a private transaction there's no reporting.
