The U.S. fertility rate has fallen to a 40-year low, according to the latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "The 2017 provisional estimate of fertility for the entire U.S. indicates about 3.85 million births in 2017 and a total fertility rate of about 1.76 births per woman," the pro-natalist Institute for Family Studies (IFS) notes. "These are low numbers: births were as high as 4.31 million in 2007, and the total fertility rate was 2.08 kids back then." The last time fertility in the U.S. fell this low was in the 1970s, when it reached a nadir of 1.74 births per woman in 1976.
The decline in the U.S. total fertility rate (TFR) mirrors a global trend. The world TFR fell from 5.1 children per woman in 1964 to 2.4 in 2016. The U.S. rate is now about the same as TFRs in most European countries. It is well below the population replacement TFR, which is generally calculated as 2.1 children per woman. If the current TFR is sustained and immigration is halted, U.S. population will begin to fall later in this century.

Now more than ever, kids cost a lot of money. Large families are for the very wealthy or the dirt poor. The middle folks can't afford to have more than one or two and still have anything resembling a decent life.

There is a line somewhere. Parents should be the primary influence and role model for their kids. The state (eg: schools) should play a minor, secondary role.

AFAIK this is the main determinant. On a global scale it follows the development of nations. If we succeed in bringing every country into advanced first world status we could very well end up with under population rather than over being our problem.

Believe that parents should shoulder the responsibility for their children. You fucking liberals certainly fucked up public education to the point hat a diploma is about as useful as tiddly wink competitions.
People should be prepared to home school, or choose schools that do not influence the child to become a useless, robot, babbling bullshit and common core instead of the educational basics that turn out use full, productive, citizens, instead of useless, stupid, ignorant, angry, selfish, self-centered, parasites.

I think I've mentioned before how my grand-daughter has turned pretty hard left. It started in High School and has continued in earnest in her Freshman year of college, I guess they call it college. She is a student at Long Island University Global. She spent her first year in Costa Rica. When she was home over Christmas we went up to visit the family in Charlotte. She and my wife went out one day to do some shopping. She talked about how the Costa Rican women hung their laundry out to dry instead of using those energy wasting dryers we have. Apparently no one taught her that those dryers were a product of women entering the work force and thus became labor saving devices.
They watched a lady have a struggle parking her pick-up truck. She once again had to share how in Costa Rica they drive small cars and there is no need for that lady to drive that big pick-up truck. Apparently cost of living and wages are beyond her comprehension.
During the election season she unfriended me because she didn't like all of my political posts. Funny how she didn't unfriend my youngest son who is probably a bit left of Sanders at this point.
