I think it could be argued that we're getting close, or at least seem to be. I'd like to see how the election plays out first. As we approach that point, we can look back at the progressives who put the wheels in motion for it to happen and establishment Republicans who did nothing to stop it.

I'd say that her prediction is interesting considering she wrote that half a century ago and not only are we all still here, but our country is not ruled by a brutal dictatorship.
As usual, reports of our demise are greatly exaggerated.

But we are progressing on that path. I'd love to do a word search of the speeches of every current presidential candidate over the last 10 months and see which candidates have used the words "freedom" and "liberty." I suspect there would be precisely one that has used those words.
The rest are very comfortable with BigFedGov "helping" "the people" through regulation and laws.
