His spokesman claims he lived best life every day to the end.
Kind of a fitting memorial.
-
I didn’t know he was a pilot and he crashed his Grumman.
-
"According to Forbes Jimmy Buffett takes his trips to paradise in style aboard his Dassault Falcon 900. Buffett also has a pilot's license and owns several other airplanes, including a Cessna 208 Caravan, Grumman Albatross, Grumman Goose, and a Boeing E-75 Stearman."

Several years ago I read his book "A pirate looks at fifty", about him flying his Albatross to South America or thereabouts. He had another pilot with. Don't know how proficient he was.
Never was a fan, although a few of his songs are ok.

The day . . .
The music . . .
DIED!

Me either but he led a cool life and enjoyed everything life had to offer. RIP

Nothing wrong with his music, it wasn't my genre. I liked it on the radio but didn't go out of my way to buy it.
-
I listened to him early on. His early albums were excellent, up through Volcano in 1979.
After that, his music became commercialized crap. I still have his early albums on my iphone.
I place Mr Buffett in the category of "Shut up and Sing". I didn't care for his politics, and would have preferred he left the audience out of it as well.

That seems to happen to a lot of musicians. They’re very creative in youth then when fame comes and they get contracts with companies and (I think) also youthful creativity and enthusiasm wanes, their music loses its edge, becomes commercialized and mainstream.

It does. With others, the opposite. As they gain fame (and fortune) that frees them to pursue their true musical interest. Eric Clapton comes to mind.

I agree with that. His later stuff is great. "Tears in Heaven" killed me though. 😭

Zappa never sold out.

Zappa never sold out.
I was listening to Zappa the other day! He also was a great producer. He produced ( and played on) Grand Funk’s album “Good Singin’ Good Playin’.
-
Zappa would occasionally be a judge on the Gong Show and would compliment the contestants then give them a 1 or maybe even a 0. It was hilarious.
-
Jimmy Buffett was a gateway drug for me. His music introduced me to Bob and Ziggy Marley and Jake Shimabukuro. I guess living most my life on or near a beach helped. Yeah, I love Hawaiian music too. But Jimmy Buffett's music (most of it) just spoke to me.
