Title: Limbaugh: We're Watching the Democrat Party Commit Suicide
Post by: Lucifer on February 02, 2019, 05:46:35 PM
Quote
"It’s kind of mesmerizing to watch, kind of exciting to watch, and the excitement tempered with some anticipation," Limbaugh said on his radio show Friday. "But essentially what we’re watching is the Democrat Party commit suicide. Now, I know it may not look like that to you because you might think the Democrat Party’s winning and dominating things, but I’m telling you, folks, they are committing suicide. And I’ll tell you who has made this happen, aside from me, and that would be D.J.T., Donald J. Trump."

I hope he's right. Unless out of the corpse of the Democrat party we have a leftist monster arise like the thing that popped out of that guy in the first Alien movie.

The communists (they call themselves democrats but nothing could be farther from the truth) always over reach and turn off the voters, sooner or later. I suspect a lot of folks that are afraid to tell pollsters the truth are in that place right now.

I doubt he is right.  10 years ago Democrats declared the Republican Party to be dead.  The media was detailing all the reasons that the Republican Party was gone and could never be resurrected and...well, it's not.  Democrats were high on their win, they got cocky, thought they had a sure fire witch to run for president and she stumbled bad.

There are about 15% of the voters who are hard core leftists.  For them, this is a dream come true and they're very fired up.  The only reason they would leave the Democrat Party is if it became "too moderate", but where would they go?  Creating a new party is impossible from a practical standpoint, all you'll do is split the vote.  Absent them having a party to flee to, they're going to vote Democrat - they most certainly will never vote Republican.

OTOH, the best thing the Republicans could do right now is secretly fund a Socialist Party and have them put forth serious candidates who would just not have enough support to get elected.  That WOULD fracture the Democrat Party and eventually force Democrats to be a centrist party.  But that shift would take a couple of decades and the entire progressive / socialist movement would lose steam.

The only trouble is, when Republicans got into power, they still wouldn't fix things.

Interesting discussion about why we are stuck with the two party system:

Quote
"During the twentieth century, American electoral politics has always been
organized around the same two major parties--Republicans and Democrats--in
large part because the adoption of state-printed ballots in the 1890s
measurably increased the difficulty of launching a third party to
challenge them. Since those major parties had an automatic slot on the
ballots and since the legal hurdles for other parties to get on those
ballots were so high, Republicans and Democrats effectively monopolized
voters' choice. During this century, therefore, the Republican party has
been the only realistic alternative to the Democrats. Thus it, and not
some other party, has usually benefited when voters sought to punish
Democrats and to replace them in office.

"In the 1850s and for most of the nineteenth century, however, the rules
of the political game encouraged rather than inhibited the creation of new
parties. Instead of state-printed ballots that gave legally recognized
major parties pride of place and disadvantaged other groups who sought to
be listed on them, political parties distributed and printed their own
ballots. As a result, it was far easier for new parties to challenge the
old ones. As Whigs would learn to their dismay, therefore, politics in
the 1850s was not a zero-sum game...Unlike their twentieth-century
Republican successors, in sum, Whigs could not monopolize opposition to
Democrats and that simple, if easily overlooked, fact more than anything
else explains the death of the Whig party."

This is a party that is self-destructing.
