Title: Someone Please Explain the scientific value of this

Please explain how modern civilization can benefit from this.

Quote
In a Wuhan-esque study, Chinese scientists are experimenting with a mutant COVID-19 strain that is 100% lethal to “humanized” mice.

The deadly virus — known as GX_P2V — attacked the brains of mice that were engineered to reflect genetic makeup similar to people, according to a study shared last week out of Beijing.

“This underscores a spillover risk of GX_P2V into humans and provides a unique model for understanding the pathogenic mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2-related viruses,” the authors wrote.

The deadly virus is a mutated version of GX/2017, a coronavirus cousin that was reportedly discovered in Malaysian pangolins in 2017 — three years before the pandemic. Pangolins, also called scaly anteaters, are mammals found in warm areas of the planet.

All the mice that were infected with the virus died within just eight days, which researchers noted was a “surprisingly” rapid death rate

Honestly I don't think there is any question there is scientific value in it. That is quite an interesting result. And one could go on to explore what aspects of the virus lead to its high lethality.

The big question is whether the risks of playing with such things in the lab outweigh the positive aspects. And certainly those risks are higher when such research is being conducted by agencies that are part of a dictatorial regime.

In a free market could funding and resources be found to perform such experiments in a manner that would allow them to be insured?

As the technologies to perform this sort of research become more readily available, the risk of some bad things happening are going to substantially increase. Frankly this sort of molecular biology isn't that hard to do.

So risking millions, if not billions of lives doing research in poorly run labs in a communist country, with those labs being under the control of the PLA, is a good thing because we can’t research something so lethal here?

Man’s technology is going to render us extinct one way or another. A virus with a 100% kill rate, or AI, or nuclear holocaust.  I don’t see how we can avoid it.

The common factor is stupidity.  And it's increasing at an exponential rate.

To argue that the ccp having this research done after releasing (intentionally no matter what the asshole squad says) on the world is so stupid that only an academic could think it was a good idea.

Good point. It is sort of like the argument for developing the atomic bomb. Wouldn’t it be better to do this research in first world countries where the chances of an accidental release are lower and there is better oversight?

But the US government has banned funding such research.

I suspect we will somehow thread our way through these risks.

A virus with a 100% kill rate doesn’t tend to spread very well.

And a few nukes are not going to make the species extinct and that is probably about all that the people who are so irresponsible as to use them on civilians can get their hands on.

AI I think is much more of a threat to the species as a carbon based life form. Though I think even there it will be a long time until we replace ourselves. Mammalian biology and in particular advanced brains are just very complicated evolved systems.

I thought you were going to say that people irresponsible enough to use them won't get much of a chance to use another.

A good point as well!
