Social Security is one of the few entitlements, along with the pay for the actual productive government workers, like the armed forces, law enforcement and educators.

Welfare, foodstamps, section 8 housing, etc is charity.

I feel entitled to receive the Social Security that I have been promised for all these years, and have been forced to pay into, and in two years when I start drawing it, the first thing I am going to buy with your money is a power tow.  The Bonanza is just getting too heavy to push into the hangar these days.  So I will say thanks to all you young people that buy that for me.  I really do feel entitled to it.

'Gimp: Thanks for your passion.

'Gimp & JeffDG: If welfare causes poverty, I'd be interested in your opinion on poverty metrics following government initiatives to address the issue. For example, the decline in poverty rates following Johnson's Great Society reforms.
How about "welfare perpetuates and expands poverty"?

My wife was a manager in HR for a company of about 2,000 people.  During the recession they had to either lay off or fire hundreds.  The truly amazing thing was how most of them could not find a job, until unemployment ended.  When it was 13 weeks it took most of them 14 weeks to find a job.  When it was 26 weeks, it took 27 weeks to find a job.  When it was 99 weeks, guess what: nobody wanted to hire someone that couldn't find ANY JOB in almost two years, so they are still unemployed.  But they don't count as unemployed because they don't draw unemployment benefits any more and have basically given up looking for real work because unemployment insurance has made them unemployable.  Now they live on what assistance they can and work under the table, without paying tax.

Ronald Reagan evolved as a Conservative over decades, and was the Conservative movement's standard bearer over a decade before he ran for President.

Trump has evolved as a "conservative" over the last couple of years.
I keep hearing that as if saying it over and over will make people believe it.

I that is true, then why did Trump consider a run for the Republican nomination in 1988?

Corrected that to make your point more honestly.
I don't think Jeff is clueless.  I think he is extremely smart and very opinionated.  When I am on his side (most of the time), I appreciate his depth of knowledge and his insight.  But when we are on opposite sides, he is extremely annoying.  His continuous use of "Dear Leader" really turns me off and makes me not even want to debate him, or read his posts.

Liking one candidate does not necessarily equate to hating another. Conservatives want a true conservative, which Trump is not.
The fact that Jeff likes Cruz isn't what causes me to think he hates Trump.  What causes me to think Jeff hates trump is all of all the things he has said about Trump, and the "Trumpkins".

I'd like to have a true conservative candidate too.  And there are millions of true conservatives.  But there are no true conservatives running that I think would make an effective leader.  If we put a true conservative in the whitehouse that turns out to be an incompetent president, THAT would spell the death of the conservative movement.

What does it say about Trump that you feel the descriptions are interchangeable?  :o
Not interchangeable.
Just misapplied.

I remember when the "Establishment Rs" were saying the same things about Reagan. Not that I think that Trump is = Reagan.  Just that the establishment is afraid of someone they can't control so they mock and disparage them.

Perhaps some of the things Jeff and Stan are saying about Trump are true.  But they don't know for sure what he will do any more than I do.  They just know they like Cruz so they must hate Trump.  In other words, "politics as usual", which is what some of us want to escape from.

.  My guess is if this was anyone else it wouldn't even be newsworthy.

You are right.  If it were almost anyone else, they would have had their careers ended and they would probably wind up in jail, and nobody would know because it wouldn't be "newsworthy".

Although I disagreed with HIllary in the video regarding the distinction between the State and Federal rights or abilities, I don't think her answer was too far off the mark.

But I don't think the death penalty should be reserved to just "horrific, mass murderers".   I do think that the standard of evidence should be tightened for death penalty cases.  Circumstantial evidence doesn't cut it.  There must be irrefutable and undeniable evidence.

Well said and I largely agree.  I will not seek, nor shall I accept the nomination.

They are two people I greatly admire.

I just think they are dead wrong about Trump.  And Cruz.

But I would still vote for 'Gimp for President if he would run.

Interesting report:

Deporting these criminals is a waste of time, at least until we improve border security to keep them from coming back.

Lucifer will be along shortly with his one-trick-pony "bible salesman" line, without any actual facts behind it, in 3...2...
Boy, when you get a hard-on for someone, you don't let go, do you?

But I'll say it even if Lucifer doesn't:
I don't want a bible thumping president that will be just as big a divider as Obama was.  Or maybe worse.

I'm neither religious or anti-religious, although I do identify with the Judaeo-Christian ethics system.  But I don't like religious zealots of any stripe.

When I hear Trump say something, then I hear the twisted sound-bites from people like Cruz that totally misrepresent what Trump said, it tends to push me in Trump's corner.  Cruz has proven that he is a devious, anything goes, politician.  His tactics have been dishonest and disgusting.  So since our choice seems to boil down to Trump or Cruz, I pick Trump.

'Gimp,

Wow!

What an articulate, well reasoned post. Thanks for that.

There's an expression: "The perception is the reality".

And my post on the topic was simply answering the allegation that the Trump=Hitler was concocted by the media, solely to bring Trump down. Emphasizing the fact that I had had a similar sentiment prior to reading it elsewhere. It was, in fact, a particular speech I listened to in my car where he was mocking Bush and Kerry in a very sarcastic, bombastic manner, and it all just sounded familiar, somehow.

Admittedly, "The Rise and Fall..." is not the be all and end all chronicle of what happened there, but I trust it got the broad sweep correctly. Another gem is "Berlin Diary", also by William Shirer, outlining a small slice of what transpired in the first person as a correspondent. Well worth the read. And available somewhere online as a pdf, IIRC.

But, again, thank for your post, and I see where you're coming from. Though the "Obama=Hitler" seems like a bit of a stretch.
I seriously doubt Gimp was advancing the "Obama = Hitler" analogy.  I think he was merely stating that it was less of a stretch than "Trump = Hitler".  I don't think Obama is near the demon that Hitler was.  But he has a very similar ability to mesmerize the masses through skillful oratory.

« on: March 09, 2016, 04:40:07 PM »
Well, I was talking about the deficit, sorry... US budget deficit, so I thought it kind of obvious that it would be about raising tax revenue. There are differing ways to raise tax revenue and among them is raising tax rates. It is likely that any real solution would incorporate raising tax rates as well as a host of other schemes. We have a lot of debt to pay down.
There are a lot schemes we can use to cut the deficit.  But first among them is to reduce deficit spending.

As they say, "When you are trying to get yourself out of a hole, the first thing you have to do is stop digging".
