Yep, I'm going there. My wife enjoys watching this show and by association I get to watch it. This season Sean Spicer was invited to compete which immediately brought comments from Tom Bergeron, the host of the show. He told the world how stupid it was to have such a "Right Winger" on their show and he had no business being there.
They are well into the season now and Sean Spicer is not a very good dancer. Unfortunately for the show the viewing audience gets to vote and that weighs heavily in who gets to stay week to week. It appears that a great part of the audience consists of those dreaded "Right Wingers" as Spicer keeps getting though each week.
Last week the couple voted out was much better and the judges and hosts were visibly upset at that. This week after he danced, the judges were hyper critical and made comments like, "you know you're not a very good dancer"
This has been fun to watch. Not sure how much longer he'll hold on. If he gets much further I suspect they will fudge the rules to get rid of him.
-
Liberals ruin everything they touch.
Most TV programs are unwatchable due to the liberal slant.
-
He's made it through again.
-
It appears they really don't know their audience. Host should have just STFU.
-
That’s just silly. The competition should be judged by people who are skilled and knowledgeable about dancing. Otherwise it’s just a popularity contest.
-
Typical libs.
When the rules are followed and they don’t get the result they want, they want to change the rules.
Seems that happened on the first Tuesday of November 2016, also.
-
My ex wife used to watch the show so I sat through it occasionally, but the professional dancers are quite attractive, so......
Anyway, as we all know, Hollywood, Entertainment and the Media have no problem showing their Far Left Bias today, and fortunately, I have turned them off for a long time now. They do exist in their Democrat bubble and believe EVERYONE FEELS LIKE THEM.

slight correction: They apparently believe that everyone MUST feel like them.

They think anyone that isn’t a forward thinking progressive is a dinosaur deserving only of extinction.

When Mrs. Steingar watches less than palatable television I go and do something else, though Mrs. Steingar would never watch Dancing with the Stars. Her favorite has been this old English archeology show, though I think, despite this show being on television for decades, that she's running out of episodes. I am absolutely certain that Mike Myers saw this show and used one of the archaeologists as the basis for Fat Bastard.
I try not to watch more than an hour of television a night, and even that's a bit much. These days I spend my evenings studying for the IR. After that I've another book to write.

You’re going for the IR? Awesome. We probably shouldn’t be talking about aviation though. ;) ;D

Ok, I’ll admit I watch it with my wife. I started a few years ago when I quit watching the NFL including MNF.
As Anthony said, some of the pro women dancers are quite hot. Though when I start predicting the scores (that will be a 9,8,9) my wife will look at me like “seriously?” Lol.
As for Spicer, the OP is correct. The judges are getting visibly upset. I’ve seen this before but I forgot who the celeb was, but the celeb kept moving on even though he was the worst dancer. I think it was the awesome comedian Bill Engvall.
Anyway, to answer your question, the audience gets to text in votes for their favorite couple. This year they changed it up so that while the audience still votes, they take the bottom two and let the judges to decide who goes home.
The problem is that Spicer hasn’t been in the bottom two, so in those weeks he’s not at risk of being eliminated, so they have to send one other couple home.
I swear I think Conservatives are trolling DWTS by voting en masse for Sean Spicer. Funny as hell!

Never watched it, but now I want to vote just for that reason.

good luck.

good luck.
I'll need it. Going through Rod Macho's book right now. I get to download and install an update for the GPS next week.

I used the Jeppesen commercial / instrument book plus a bunch of others to get the theory down, then the Sheppard test prep to get through the exam. WAY over studied but it worked. Good luck!!

I LOVE Rod Machado’s book! I have a 1998 copy. It might be somewhat outdated but still relevant, and hilarious.
Do you have the check ride scheduled?

Good luck Michael. I enjoyed doing the IR.

Enjoy it. I really liked getting my IR. I did a lot of my training at night which really helped (no shadows on the panel like when you’re under the hood in the daylight.). Try to get as much actual IMC as possible with your instructor. It’s a LOT different than being under the hood.

Goodness no. I don't think I've 5 hours under the hood, and I suck royally. So far it's been rather hit and miss, and I think it's going to continue that way. My airplane is too dark to train at night, so I'm limited to the weekends until Spring. I do need to take the written soon, so I can move onto some other things.

I’ve heard a lot of pilots say the IR was the most challenging thing they’ve done. And it is probably the single best thing you can do for your safety and competence. Good luck!👍

The instrument rating is only as good as the holders willingness to stay current and proficient. Absent that, the rating is worthless.
Countless accidents have happened where the pilot had an instrument rating, was not proficient or current, and turned into a smoking hole.
The average GA airplane is not well equipped for actual low IFR environments and operations. A single source vacuum, or a single attitude indicator can turn deadly quick. Sure, pilots train for partial panel, but in reality a partial panel low IFR approach is beyond most capabilities.

We just had a fatal crash yesterday not too far away in Jersey. A doctor based at Linden. It was low IFR yesterday. I have NO IDEA what they cause was, so I am not speculating on anything. However, if you are not proficient an IR can lead to more risk taking when you are not up to the task. That being said, it is better to have it than not, but judgment must always be used like anything else.

I strongly disagree. I received my IR 9 years ago, but haven’t been current in 5 years (since I started flying warbirds.) so I can’t and won’t fly in IMC until I get an IPC and go beyond to get proficient again.
However, the discipline in flying at known pitch/power settings, stabilized approaches to landings, holding headings and altitudes, assessing Wx, comfort in radio communications, comfort in night flying, unusual attitudes, even steep turns and other VFR maneuvers are ALL benefits from getting the IR rating.
Bottom line is it made me a much better pilot. It also gives me options that simply don’t exist if you don’t have your IR (and can become current and proficient.) If Im going on a long trip, I’m getting Current and proficient in IMC before I launch on a long XC. A VFR-only pilot doesn’t have that option.

But you have the discipline to do that. You are also displaying ADM and RM skills.
Unfortunately many in the GA world don't share those same attitudes. A quicky IR rating that is minimum standards, and then not kept current is deadly when the pilot encounters deteriorating weather and decides to press on because "I have the rating".
Also, RM comes into play on a small airplane with a single source vacuum or a single source attitude indicator. Doing an ILS to minimums with low weather surrounding your destination for 100 miles or more is running up the risk above what many low time inexperienced pilots can safely deal with.
Unfortunately, remaining current in the GA world is on the honor system. Some choose to exercise good ADM skills, and others do not.
-
BTW, I made a new thread over in the pilot section for the discussion on the IR. http://www.pilotspin.com/index.php?topic=3980.new#new
Apologies for the derail of the OP's thread

Your premise was that the IR was worthless unless you maintained proficiency and currency.
I gave examples of why it was not worthless, even though I’m no longer current.
The rest of your premise that you are MORE dangerous by having it and not being proficient can literally apply to anything, including the guy who flies once a month to a $100 pancake breakfast 25 miles away.
-
There is no facet of aviation that isn't dangerous if not approached with rigor, sincerity and perseverance.

I can certainly introduce you to some PP's I know that have IR's, and you could not pay me to ever get in a plane with them. And they claim they are current and proficient.
BTW, I put a thread over on the aviation side so we wouldn't derail this thread.

Another week and Sean Spicer is still in and the judges get more indignant each week. I love it.

The irony is unmistakeable. They made the rules but now that the rules deliver an undesired outcome, they want to change the rules to deliver the ‘right’ result.

Funny as hell. Spicer is the shittiest dancer out there and he keeps getting saved by the fans.

Yep, it has my wife royally pissed off. I laugh every week. I'm thinking the production company will step in at some point.
My wife thinks he should just bow out. I think he's probably getting a big kick out of it. Maybe it's been good for ratings this year. That show is getting a little long in the tooth.
