Title: Glimmer of Hope
Post by: EppyGA - White Christian Domestic Terrorist on July 22, 2023, 06:59:00 AM
A little story from yesterday.....

My wife and I go out for breakfast on Fridays.  We rotate between a couple of local restaurants.  We're sitting at our table and young man gets set at the table next to us.  He asks us what's good as he's never been there before.  We gave him a couple of ideas and he ordered his breakfast. We ended up chatting and he told us a story of his work place.  He is the Maintenance Manager at a distribution warehouse. Talked about three ladies that work, one Jewish and two Seventh day Adventists.  They had been told they had to work on a Saturday for mandatory overtime. They were distraught and had volunteered to work Sunday instead but told it had to be Saturday. Jamie went to their work area and noticed one of them was extremely upset. He learned about their issue while talking with them.  Jamie ended up going to the General Manager and having a conversation with him. He explained that they had to put up with having gender neutral bathroom and attending a Pride Month event, the least he could do is accommodate these three ladies.  He stood up for them and in the end they are being allowed to work on Sunday.

Jamie is a strong Conservative whose parents immigrated to the U.S. from Columbia when he was six.  He was raised as a Conservative and has a seven year old son.  I asked him if his son had been asked to pick pronouns yet. He said no and if he was he'd pull him from school.

Nice to meet folks like Jamie.

Great story!  I'm very glad that the America I know is still out there.

It’s fun to meet a random stranger and learn their life story.  I sometimes do that with a seat mate on a flight when I’m traveling alone.  Never see them again, never exchange names.  But you find out how alike many of us are, sharing the same human problems.

People born in foreign countries often "get it".

I love that story, Eppy.

Wearing liberal crap to Oshkosh is a bit like wearing a MAGA hat into Starbucks. Oshkosh is about teamwork, innovation, shared history, FOLLOWING CERTAIN IMMUTABLE LAWS OF NATURE, and so on.

I wore the t-shirt shown in my profile picture to a Starbucks. Got lots of people peering at it and shaking their heads. I guess they can’t comprehend non-Democrats having certain opinions or certain qualities that don’t fit their preconceived beliefs.

Or have lived there.  I did the random stranger thing by phone the other day. My laptop battery died and I needed to order a new one.  I have a service agreement with a company for my laptop but no need to ship it to them to change the battery when I can do it myself. However I wanted them to guide me to buy the right battery so called them up and after solving the battery issue, ended up talking to the lady for almost an hour.

We slipped into politics and turns out she is a die hard Trump supporter.  She is also my exact age which means she was a child during the Cuban missile crisis.  Her family was living in Cuba at the time as her father worked there. When the crisis hit they were given six hours to evacuate and had to rush and get on a U.S. Navy ship which took them to Norfolk.  It traumatized her so much that she refused to get on another boat her entire life.

Hahaha!!! So true. These days the only thing I do in Starbucks is blatantly use their restroom without purchasing anything. Some years ago we were traveling and I bought a cappuccino there, just because I’d used their restroom, and had to throw it away. Acrid crap.

Used their restroom a couple weeks ago while on a road trip and noticed their newest thing is, believe it or not, olive oil-infused coffee. Gimmicky.

Yuck!  I can't even cook with that stuff.  I use avocado oil.

Not to derail this too much, but how is avocado oil for baking?  Olive oil works better for me than vegetable oil.  I'm afraid to use coconut oil.  But how is avocado oil for things like cakes, etc.?

And in another direction, I'm a total convert to gas cooking.  Even fast cooking vs. electric.  And when it's off, it's off.  Don't know what I was afraid of.

I’ve never used it for baking so I can’t answer that. And I want gas again so bad but our kitchen design makes getting a line in problematic.

I use olive oil and avocado oil interchangeably and can't tell any difference, except for a slight taste.  I do like the taste of olive oil on salad and bread but I like avocado oil for all things cooking.

On our recent cruise, they had a Star Bucks in the big avenue area. All day, every day people were lined up buying things there.  I enjoyed my "free" coffee in the dining room at breakfast.
