I've been lucky for the past part of my life to be relatively healthy. Now, as I age things are catching up with me. Which means more interaction with the health industry.
Everything about it is whacked up. Here fill this out to see the GP: There's 6 PAGES of forms! I need a Philly lawyer to figure this all out. Consent: You want to give my medical records to who? For what? Oh - hell - no. Strike through all that with the pen. Writers cramp, but finished. Now I go to the intake lady. I have one, and only one question: How - much - will - this - cost - me? I have good insurance. I pay a lot of money each month to see that I'm insured for health care. Do I get an answer to my single question? Oh - hell - no. It depends. On what? Don't know, but it depends. Call insurance company patient line; How - much - will - this - cost - me? Uh, we don't know. Who does know? Um, we'll get back to you. Wait for call back. Hah, are you kidding. I call insurer, ask my one question again. Now I get a range. From $111 to 475. Wow - that's quite a range there. Is it going to be closer to $111, or $500? More investigation, more questions, more info, more, more, more FROM me. Nothing from them. Finally the billing dept for the dr(who does not do his own billing) calls and gives me a number. $421. But with it comes a 'maybe'. Maybe what? If the test shows this thing, then you have to go get other test, and that will be a different cost.
Shit. So I have the test done, and yup - it shows this thing, and need to go to another different dr. But wait - what will that cost? We don't know, and we won't know until you get to the dr. Oh, and BTW - this first guy you are seeing is not really a Dr, he's a 'medical assistant specialist'. WTF? Does he or does he not have a MD issued by my state? No - he - does - not. Well screw that! I'm paying top dollar for my insurance, not some discounted low-rent payment, but real US dollars, to a real US company. I want a real US MD. You will have to wait. I will wait, at home, call me. We don't do that. OK, change my appt to when I can be seen by the MD which I'm paying for. I get the appt. Come back that day, only to find that MD is out today, and I'll be seen by the 'medical assistant specialist'. Did you not understand why we changed the appt last time? I can be seen by a different MD. Fine - whatever. They've beaten me down.
After 4 hours wait, I go into a small cube, and a real MD comes in. He asks a few questions, and wants to start the exam. I ask him to wash his hands, and he glares at me like I'm from outer space. I'm the bad guy. I'm way out of line. I'm some kind of germophobe(not really, just wash your hands). He says with a huff; "I wash my hands after every exam I give". OK, whatev. He does the deal, finds what we already know is wrong, he says I will write you a prescription, he gets ready to leave. As he walks out the door, I speak up; "Doctor, are you going wash your hands after this exam?" Oh boy - if glares could kill. He quickly rinses his hands under the faucet, and walks away.
Get my prescription from the girl at the counter, and just to check, I look at it. Hmmmm; hand it back to her, she is a nurse asst - "isn't this a Sulfa based drug?" Why yes, yes it is, that is most effective. You didn't read my intake chart - did you? He didn't read my intake chart either, did he? What's the problem. I'm highly allergic to Sulfa drugs. This could probably kill me in a matter of hours if not a day. I ask for the prescription back so I can keep it for my coming law suit. She declines. I ask for my own medical records. She declines. They get the MD over. 'What's the problem?' I'm allergic to Sulfa, right there on the chart where it asks: "are you allergic to any medications?" Where I checked the 'yes' box, and wrote in: "All Sulfa drugs". Can I have a copy of that? Nope - it belongs to the office, not you. The MD tells me to leave. I tell him since he didn't do his job, I'm not paying my bill. This is starting to be fun!
They will call security. I tell them to call, I'm leaving and the next people they get to talk to are my lawyer. Lucky, my phone takes pictures, so I take a quick snap of the prescription on the nurse counter. My name, and the MD name clearly visible. As I'm leaving, some fat slob with a uniform is coming in, I say 'hi' he says 'hi' and we pass in the hall. As I get to my car, the fat slob is motoring over to me, waving. "You need to go back inside and pay your bill". Oh please, I'm begging you - make me. Really, now I want you to make me go back inside and pay my bill. Please, please, please, make me get out of my car, and drag me back inside. Nope, I'll call the police. You do that, you have my name, address, and all the info you need. Please, do call the police. I drive away.
Thus ends another fine involvement with the medical profession. BTW, I found another MD who does not take insurance. I make appt, ask for the charges to be identified in advance, give basically the same info, get my exam, and will submit the bill to my insurance online. Got my RIGHT prescription and am feeling better. Let's hope the other MD bills me. Oh - I can't wait to come down like hellfire on their asses.
-
Don't worry, this will all be a bad memory when we get Single Payer. :o
-
Don't worry, this will all be a bad memory when we get Single Payer. :o
True that!
It won't cost you anything with single payer. It will be "free".
But you will get an appointment in 9 months, and if you are still alive, you will be lucky to get those sulfa drugs. And not only will you see an assistant instead of a doctor, the assistant probably won't speak English.
-
You’re a troublemaker! 8)
I looked into concierge medicine or direct primary care backed by major medical/catastrophic health insurance for this coming year but as we are retiring this coming year decided to put off that change to 2019.
-
...major medical/catastrophic health insurance...
Where can you buy that, where it doesn't cost $1000/mo and meets OscrewYouCare mandates?
-
Don't worry - there's a guy from the government who can help.
A significant part of the health care problem is ours - we expect to be horribly unhealthy and then demand that the doc give us a magic pill to undo it all. But the doc is only another human who just happens to have some above average knowledge of how the human body works, he isn't omnipotent. So when he fails to be omnipotent, someone gets upset with him and sues him for not being perfect.
Result of getting sued, he makes sure not to do the same thing again. So next time he orders three more tests, just to make sure that the conditions he got sued for before aren't present. Why not one? Because one test might miss it and then he's be sued again for the same thing. Better to be safe, it isn't his money he's spending. Your money can buy him a whole lot of risk relief.
-
Where can you buy that, where it doesn't cost $1000/mo and meets OscrewYouCare mandates?
Even if the new tax law doesn't eliminate the mandate, chances are many people are exempt from the mandate because the lowest cost available Bronze ACA marketplace plan premium exceeds 8.05% of their income. As to non-ACA plans, search for "short term medical"; here's a quick backgrounder:
https://resources.ehealthinsurance.com/affordable-care-act/short-term-major-medical-plan (https://resources.ehealthinsurance.com/affordable-care-act/short-term-major-medical-plan)
Some places that provide online quotes:
https://www.agilehealthinsurance.com/short-term-health-insurance-quotes (https://www.agilehealthinsurance.com/short-term-health-insurance-quotes)
https://www.lifemapco.com/shop-individual-plans/get-quote?product=stm (https://www.lifemapco.com/shop-individual-plans/get-quote?product=stm)
https://www.ehealthinsurance.com/ehi/st/short-term-census (https://www.ehealthinsurance.com/ehi/st/short-term-census)
One big problem is that Obama-era regulators in 2016 put the screws to non-ACA health insurance so terms longer than 3 months were no longer allowed:
http://www.thinkadvisor.com/2016/10/31/feds-cap-short-term-health-insurance-duration-at-3 (http://www.thinkadvisor.com/2016/10/31/feds-cap-short-term-health-insurance-duration-at-3)
Trump thankfully issued an executive order in October that is supposed to roll that back, but haven't seen any action on that yet:

Where can you buy that, where it doesn't cost $1000/mo and meets OscrewYouCare mandates?
You can't. By definition, a major medical plan won't meet the ACA's mandates, so you cannot buy it at any price.
Micro-economics 101, supply and demand. Increased demand -> more covered patients - price goes up. Increased requirements -> increased cost - price goes up. Decreased supply -> doctors quitting - price goes up.
This is why the ACA fails the Affordable part of it's name and how we can prove that it was never about affordability. Unless you just want to agree that Congressional Democrats know nothing about economics and should never be allowed to make a financial budget decision ever again. Ignorance or malfeasance are the only choices I see.

Some Obama-appointed judge in Hawaii probably put a stay on it.

Really, the insurance hassle was just one component of the whole mischigoss. I was really pissed by the time I got to the Dr office. Which did not help the situation, but when he didn't like washing his hands(and no gloves either) I was on edge.

“Doctor, are you going to wash your hands after this exam?”
Frigin’ awesome! You’ve got game!

What really gets me are the eye pressure doohickeys that touch your cornea. They wipe those with alcohol between patients. That strikes me as horribly inadequate and I have been known to interrogate the poor nurse about whether the previous patient had corneal herpes.
-
If one really doesn't like the heath care industry one does not have to frequent doctors. One can suffer in silence. One will not be missed by them either.

Seriously.
You are.

Yeah, sometimes the operator wipes the headrest and/or chinrest 1st THEN wipes the glowing blue thing that touches the eye. I make them re-do it, and that always results in a death stare from them. But seriously, you're supposed to be a medical PROFESSIONAL, dammit. WTH?

An interesting twist here - the new tax bill included a repeal of the individual mandate from the ACA. You can no longer be punished if you don't buy health insurance.

Starting January 1, 2019. So there’s one more year of taking it up the ass by FedGov. Love those brave Republicans. They sure know how to be spineless pussies.

Technically it was not repealed, the penalty was set at zero.

I love it how Trump is unravelling every anti American policy Obama put in place. He is doing exactly what he said he would do in the campaign, and this is in a law, not an EO.
-

You are correct. It makes it easier to bring the rate up when the framework of the law remains.
That’s why all of the “simplification” provisions related to deductions are “suspended”, not eliminated. Because almost all of this sunsets after 2025 except for the 21% C corporation rate and repeal of the corporate AMT.
-

Yup. I was going to get angry about it, but the right way to undo things is through the legislature. However, I wish the damn legislature would just up and repeal in total. Then, if they want to do something with healthcare, do their own thing. I wish we could remove govt from the health care industry entirely.

As long as health insurance companies are receiving billions of dollars in subsidies, and as long as those insurance companies are keeping congress and the senate in their hip pocket, don't count on it.
-
count on shrinking govt interference? Any form of govt control? Hardly. However, I've been reliably informed there is a nearly mass exodus going on in EPA, and may soon spread to other dept. A small ray of hope. But - way too much profit in health care for the feds to stay away.

There has been a mass exodus in a lot of federal agencies the past 5 years or so. My agency is around 70% of what we should be. Since most federal employees retire the first week of January, I'm interested to see what the numbers will look like after.

"SHOULD BE"?
Unless you are with the DOD, it SHOULD probably be less than half of what it is now.
-

I agree. But there is a lot of fat with DOD contractors and employees that can go. We also need to do away with GS-15/SES political apointees.

Working the streets as a fed leo, it's getting dangerous to be out there with a skeleton crew.

Such a perfect combination for a progressive, academic, parasite.

Let me guess: You have, at any time available to you: 1) a gun 2) Taser 3) Body armor 4) Mace(or chem equiv) 5) handcuffs 6) dispatch radio/cell 7) car, maybe with armor also.
I'm trying hard to work up some sympathy. No - really I am. Darn - just can't quite get there.
Back to healthcare debate?

Josh doesn’t deal with the ordinary public. He deals with people that are already on the wrong side of the law. I understand his need for a full complement of backup.

That's not helping me with the pity-party. I guess my mistake was knowing the occupational risks, and also the control over risk. Or - maybe I just see way too many innocent people's lives destroyed by out of control LEO. Could be either.
OBTW, unless one gets the idea I'm some kind of know-nothing when it comes to hazardous jobs, I've worked in two of the top 10 categories. LEO doesn't even break the top 10.

Steingar is mentally disturbed these days.
With Donald Trump as President he has been outed as a racist, hating people based on nothing but skin color, and he is so breathtakingly uniformed that every post drips with insanity, hatred, racism, elitism, and raging delusions of mediocrity.

Ahhh, Henning.
He recommended a flight instructor and airplane rental guy in South Florida. I did go and see that guy, and considered it, but found a different guy to fly with.

Damn, sorry I asked.
Lets see, I have an expired SCCA license, haven't raced in decades, never made a dime - but spent a fair amount. I do work on my own cars, rarely on others. I do sell used cars that I've restored, not commercially. Yep, I just completed building a platform that goes on my truck to build the rest of my hangar, so machinist(amateur), fab, welder. No to rail insp. No to strip club/bartender(but I do like to go there sometimes). Photographer no, just for my own stuff of course. No photo lab tech. Hehe - I did pound nails in house construction a long, long time ago when I was a teen, but barely a temp job, not a supe. I can sail, but not for profit, just with me and the wife. Captain - no(yes, if it's my own boat?). Aircraft mech - again I work on my own planes, but not commercially. Cranes no, diver yes(open water, wreck), pilot yes, project mgr yes, boat builder no(but have restored a couple small ones; google Glastron CV-23). I've done some interesting things, in interesting places. Already been called a liar, so meh - doesn't bother me.
Edit: I have worked in and around the nuclear field for some years, but it's not something I discuss. Had a few close calls there. Pantex, Lawrence Livermore, Gulf/Gen Atomic, and a few others were some of my stops in a different career(google 'nuke plant jumper', something similar).

hehe! no worries. He sounds like a bit of a character. I should either be offended? or proud, not sure which - but it's all in good fun. I've met and been around some prominent people, but surely didn't rub shoulders with any. I recorded some 80s acts that people would recognize, but only got to know Debbie Harry fairly well. Actually quite well. Actually - very, very well. 8)

Talking to God is no special feat, billions of people do it. Henning claimed that God talked back.

Yeah, that's what I meant.
And He told Henning His reasoning for his commandments.

I was in bands in that era. Wasn't she married to the guirtarist in Blondie who almost died on tour from some type of health problem? She was hot in her day, that's for sure. Saw them, Television, and The Ramones at CBGB's in the late 70's.

I'm not sure if they were married, but yes they were a long-time couple. I don't know if he messed around on the side(likely) but I know she did. He had some kind of kidney, liver or other blood problem. They were in LA for quite a while and I think he was at Cedars-Sinai for his condition. She did a fair amount of voice over for commercials that you would never guess. We did work for Buick, and I think Pepsodent? and some other stuff. Her laugh was breathy, and kind of gutteral and she did non-speaking, laugh, sigh, wail voice over, as well as some spoken. Sometimes hard to work with, but not as picky on voice-over which is most of what I did at night shift.
-
^^^^^^Interesting. Didn't know she did voice overs. That was a wild time to be a young guy around the music scene.
-
I do know Henning. He's flown with me in the Warrior and we've had lunch a couple of times. He had his 310 hangared at KLZU. The day before he flew to Air Venture and landed gear up I helped bind insurance for it through the broker I use. Henning can be a little crude but is a nice guy.

Everybody did voice-overs. I was in the studio one night, mixing some tracks for a commercial, and in walked Andy Williams. WTF? 20 minutes later he had the headset on and was waxing nostalgic about some pizza or chicken place. I kid you not. Andy effing Williams. Doing a chicken or pizza voice over. Everyone was restricted from telling anything anywhere about who did voice overs. It was a weird time - that's no doubt. I had no talent with the guitar, but I could mix, and keep time, so I made the best of that. After college, I left it all behind. The weirdness continued when I was working with the GoGos. They could all sing, but most of the group didn't know much about music, or playing guitar. Belinda could write and sing, so we got along ok, but I did sooooooo many freaking takes with her band that we finally just cut the vocals, and I had some session guys come in and put down the backbeat and lead. It was - a mess. You can hear it on some of the recordings(at least I can).

He was nice to me and fun to banter with. Definitely a dynamic guy, and I don't care much whether he really did all that stuff.
I still use the wax he recommended on my car - Collinite #845.

I met Henning once. Liked him. But don't claim to know him well.

Never met him. To be honest, I kind of avoided him. A good friend from POA told me he had a very, very vulgar mouth. Still, he seems like a talented guy, with a lot of good stories, that I actually believe. I'd probably sit down, and have a beer, or two with him today.

I wonder how much money he raised for his urban agriculture crowd funding scam? I was not a fan, and he shut down plenty of discussions on POA back in the day with his off-the-wall, expert-in-all, God speaks through me take on things.
Over on FB he’s friends with someone that I’m friends with, and every so often he will jump in and do the same shit, as well as post the link to his urban agriculture scam as the cure all and end of governments as we know them.

I don't remember the urban ag scam, but I do remember his idea to run old Russian nuke subs in series to generate power for communities. Can you imagine a bunch of Russian nuke subs, sitting in the bay running their reactors, with a big cord going to shore? LOL!

Oh yeah. The Jews and the Rothschilds. At the minimum it was mildly entertaining.

He could have a vulgar mouth. But a few times when we met, Leslie was with me, and he was an (almost) perfect gentleman.
