Title: Did TSA look into my laptop?
Post by: Rush on May 23, 2016, 05:47:13 AM
I don't mean boot it up, I mean open it and look inside.

After I got on the plane I opened my laptop and the keyboard was askew, loose, partly off.  Did TSA take it off to look inside and make sure it wasn't a bomb?

I was busy in the nudogram to see what they were doing but I did see one of them lift up my suitcase and take it away from the conveyor belt (I assume they pawed through that too).  I had a biohazard kit in there with a metallic transport bag. Maybe that showed up on the x-ray as a solid block?  Ooooo she has medical tubes, maybe her laptop is a bomb.

After I pushed the keyboard back in place, my laptop works fine.

If opening my laptop is the worst they do I'll count myself lucky.

Welcome to Spin!  Good to see you here.

Last year, the screeners at LAX ruined a pair of shoes for me.  They sliced open the heels.  When I got off the plane at ORD the heels fell off.

You've got to be kidding.

Oh, wait, this is the same TSA that used a pitot tube as a step to prove that they can get into a jetliner through the pilots window.

Did you see them cut into your shoe?  I would have called the police right there.

No, I was busy going thru the body scanner.  My shoes went thru the xray.  They must have seen something they didn't like.  They were almost new, there is no other way it could have happened.

Thanks!  Wow, you could try to file a claim.  I know you can do that and in theory they're supposed to make it right, but the problem is proving they did it.  I don't see how you can do that if you don't know the damage happened until you get to your destination.  It would probably be a waste of time.

Hi Rush!  Welcome!!!  Hope you and Mark are doing well.  Long time no see.  The TSA/DHS are some of the most intrusive, un-Constitutional agencies in government.  Well maybe next to the IRS, EPA, BATFE.......etc.

Unlike Michael, I do not accept their overly intrusive nature.

Says you.  I haven't gotten on a jet since they started this malarkey (started on the watch of GHWB and his GOP Congress, by the way...).  Security theatre at its finest.

I got on one last weekend, after a couple years traveling exclusively by GA.  Needless to say: I didn't like it for several reasons.

Hi Anthony!!   Yep we're doing great, had to move to Texas and sell the plane though.  So now I need to fly back to NC several times a year to take care of Mom so I too am having to adjust to commercial flying after only flying GA for most of the last 30 years. :(

It's probably just a crappy laptop that came from together.

1) Pictures or it didn't happen.

2) Popo would probably arrest you for "interfering with a FEDERAL OFFICER"

I think that only happens to Bonanza laptops!

I shit you not. August 2008.

Correction, it was a TAT probe. The TSA inspector used them as a ladder. Grounded nine American Airlines planes.

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=5613502&page=1

American Eagle airplanes were grounded Tuesday after a TSA inspector, conducting an overnight security check, used sensitive instrument probes to climb onto the parked aircraft at Chicago's O'Hare Airport, aviation sources tell ABCNews.com.

A TSA official confirmed the incident.

The TSA agent, as part of spot inspection of aircraft security, climbed onto the parked aircraft using control sensors mounted on the fuselage as handholds, according to a TSA official in Chicago, Elio Montenegro.

"Our inspector was following routine procedure for securing the aircraft that were on the tarmac," Montenegro told ABCNews.com.

The TSA agent was attempting to determine if someone could break into a parked aircraft, according to Montenegro.

Pilots were furious at the TSA misstep.

"The brilliant employees used an instrument located just below the cockpit window that is critical to the operation of the onboard computers," one pilot wrote on an American Eagle internet forum. "They decided this instrument, the TAT probe, would be adequate to use as a ladder," the pilot wrote.

Another pilot wrote the TSA agents, "are now doing things to our aircraft that may put our lives, and the lives of our passengers at risk."

The part I find most astounding about this is that you have a laptop where the keyboard could be lifted out and taken out without disassembling the bulk of the computer.  I've never seen any model like this and I've torn into more than my fair share of computers.

Older iBooks were like that - 2 or 3 slide latches and the keyboard would pivot up and out. IIRC, one needed a paper clip to "unlock" one of the latches.

Modern MacBooks not so much.
