Spin Zone / Re: Countdown to Civil War

Will go out on a limb and say we're way, way off from a civil war. As a general statement, it often feels "worse than it ever has been", but invariably it isn't, it just feels that way. Now, sometimes it is worse than it ever has been. But I don't think this is it.

Spin Zone / Re: The Actual News
« on: October 31, 2018, 07:21:57 AM »
The MSM has tried to make the case that internet news pages and bloggers are not actual news sources.  At one point several lawmakers were considering some sort of legislation to "license" or accredit what they felt were legitimate news sources.

The MSM for years enjoyed being able to control the daily narrative and "filter" whatever they wanted from the POTUS.  Social Media has now changed that dynamic and the MSM doesn't like that.

A single person's Twitter feed is one person's opinion. Granted, the opinion of the POTUS is weighty. And there is nothing wrong with reading a single person's opinion. We do this constantly. But one person's opinion is never "the news".

Well, my ban on POA was lifted today and I was finally able to read the message that the mods sent me regarding my ban and the statement below is what got me banned.

"I just find the whole thing bizarre. Her claiming she is part Native American to gain personal and political advantage and Trump calling her Pocahontas in a derisively bigoted manner. I just don’t get it. And it has nothing to do with either one’s political affiliation."

And here is the rule they say I violated.

"Political/Religious discussions are prohibited. This includes any language or discussion deemed to be political or politically charged in nature as well as any religious speech or text. This language is exceedingly destructive to the cohesion of the community and as such will not be tolerated."

So I guess saying that two politicians ,one from each side, are being stupid is deemed as being political.  And here I thought I was being nonpartisan.

I have reported this post for talking about talking about politics. Enjoy your ban!  ;)

It's no joke. Look at what Don Lemon just did to West on his CNN report. Leave the Liberal machine and be persecuted to the end.

Yeah. But have you watched his Mercury impression?

Does she only have a land line? Did a tree just take down the line to her house?

You can look up her property, look up the owners of her neighbors, try to find their info and try to call them.

Mom got through to the neighbor who went to check on her. She's ok. She had turned off her cell phone to conserve the battery. And trees knocked out the landline phone line. All is well, appreciate the help.

We can't get hold of a relative in Panama City anyone know of cell service is out?

It's likely very congested. What I've seen on West FL news send to indicate Panama City Beach was spared the worst of it. Not sure, though.

I was going to 'like' this because it represents much of how I think as well. I just want to add that as a young-un I was mostly a liberal, and I was so effing SURE how right I was, maybe I commiserate a little too much with the opposition. In the short time(relatively) I've been here, there has been massive growth and change in asechrest, and bflynn. I won't bother to critique other more strident folks, they are working through the liberal challenges the way I once did.

It's a bit of a few things, I think. I've grown as a person. The Democratic party has grown away from me. I'm not afraid to immerse myself in the views of the opposition, which necessarily means I recognize that some of those views are better than my own previous views, (since no side is always best, hint hint to some folks here). And I'm so f*cking busy that, frankly, I have little time to worry with the entrenchment of my own political views.

This is much of why I let Becky know I don't currently have the passion to convince her to be a Liberal.

I also know that it doesn't work like this for everyone, though, as I've now grown more "conservative" than my own mother and father, who are obviously substantially older than I am.

This is the penultimate result of #MeToo, gone overboard and awry. Hope he gets through it.

I think we need to put together a moderator budget to purchase participation trophies for those who, through no fault of our own, weren’t chosen to be Supreme Leaders of the Galaxy (a/k/a “moderators”) yet still need to be validated as being important and valued members of this board.

Let me direct you to my new seminar on being an adult: Click Here. For only $49.95 per course, I will soon release the following additional seminars -

  • Telling the Future for Dummies® - An in-depth analysis of why announcing moderators on an unmoderated forum might cause unrest
  • Circling the Wagons - Why it has no place on the moderation team
  • Transparency - Not just for windows

I'd really like to hear what JeffDG has to say in hindsight.  He HATED Trump and left the forum because Trump won.

He acted like a liberal woman, so I doubt we will ever hear from him.

(My apologies to women everywhere, liberal or not).

I miss JeffDG. I enjoyed his posts.

The author of this book was on NPR this morning. Haven't looked into it yet, but seems related.

Product description
Something has been going wrong on many college campuses in the last few years. Speakers are shouted down. Students and professors say they are walking on eggshells and are afraid to speak honestly. Rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide are rising—on campus as well as nationally. How did this happen?

First Amendment expert Greg Lukianoff and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt show how the new problems on campus have their origins in three terrible ideas that have become increasingly woven into American childhood and education: What doesn’t kill you makes you weaker; always trust your feelings; and life is a battle between good people and evil people. These three Great Untruths contradict basic psychological principles about well-being and ancient wisdom from many cultures.  Embracing these untruths—and the resulting culture of safetyism—interferes with young people’s social, emotional, and intellectual development. It makes it harder for them to become autonomous adults who are able to navigate the bumpy road of life.

Lukianoff and Haidt investigate the many social trends that have intersected to promote the spread of these untruths. They explore changes in childhood such as the rise of fearful parenting, the decline of unsupervised, child-directed play, and the new world of social media that has engulfed teenagers in the last decade. They examine changes on campus, including the corporatization of universities and the emergence of new ideas about identity and justice. They situate the conflicts on campus within the context of America’s rapidly rising political polarization and dysfunction.

This is a book for anyone who is confused by what is happening on college campuses today, or has children, or is concerned about the growing inability of Americans to live, work, and cooperate across party lines.

It may have been the Tequila that made her think that.  :)

I had a very nice time with the both of you, and also thought Mrs. Steingar was quite charming.  You certainly married well Michael.  Maybe someday you can give me your secret as I certainly haven't!  LOL!

I appreciate this exchange. It's a good reminder that some of us here are real people. And a few of you have even met to confirm the same!

Well, the invitation is open for those who ever get down to Florida. I'm in West Central, Tampa area. Message me here and we'll get together, and I'm happy to host.
