Title: No Idea If This IS Correct - If It's True, It's Funny As Hell

Quran scholar: Martyrs get raisins, not virgins

Note to jihadists: It’s raisins you’ll get in heaven for acts of martyrdom – not virgins. That’s according to at least one scholar who studied the Quran’s original text and found the word that’s been commonly translated to mean “virgin” in times of late actually means “raisin.”

A similar mistranslation of "young woman" to "virgin" may also be responsible for a major cornerstone of the Christian mythos as well.

But at least Christ is not known to be born of a raisin!

I had never heard that, but it would certainly explain a lot.
But at least Christ is not known to be born of a raisin!
When I first heard about that particular mistranslation, it was about "white grapes" instead of raisins, but the point is the same.  It was Neal Bortz that I first heard that from.

I don't even need to click the silly link.

There is no Quranic promise of Virgins for Martydom.  Why didn't you ask, since you have a resident Muslim on the forum?  It's NOT funny to spread disinformation.

OK.  What is the origin of the myth of "Virgins for Martyrdom"?  I always suspected there was some fallacy there because the premise is just so unfathomable.  But it sure seems to be widespread.

From the link:

Quote
Other details of the houris that have been pointed out by religious scholars include that the houris would not urinate, defecate, become pregnant or menstruate.[12] It has also been said that all houris are "transparent to the marrow of their bones",[13][14] "eternally young",[15] "hairless except the eyebrows and the head",[15] "pure"[14] and "beautiful".[14]

From the link:

But how many could dance on the head of a pin?

This is all rather pedantic. Many Muslim martyrs think they are going to a reward that involves "women" of one form and/or number or another.

Not that Christian martyrs are not also craving some sort of heavenly reward.

Pretty sure its all made up regardless, so kinda dumb to get bogged down in technicalities.

Oh, I wasn't refuting your points or anything, just picked out a part I found hilarious.

I know.

I guess the only major theological question that's important here is...

...do they have vaginas?*

*Transparent or otherwise.

And are they sewn up, as is the custom in many Muslim countries.
But . . .
Does that even make any difference any more (with this whole "transgender" thing going on).

Whether they have them or not is immaterial (I suppose literally and figuratively), since the would-be martyr isn't getting them either, because they're VIRGINS (and are to remain that way).

Tons of misinterpretation (mistranslation) in that link.  Wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

Cool thing about Wikipedia is that its crowd-sourced.

IOW, if there are misinterpretations or mistranslations, jump in and edit them!

This is an honest question with no agenda:  Are Muslims around the globe expected to know or have a working knowledge of Arabic?

The Catholic Church used Latin frequently, but that changed after Vatican II in the 1960's. Now there is no need for a practicing Catholic to know Latin, though it is still used in some traditions.

Good question- Quranic Arabic is a (unfortunately) a dead language.  It's no longer spoken.  As a native English speaker my learning curve for it is the same as an Egyptian or Iraqi.
