Title: Walmart (and others) minimum wage
Post by: Little Joe on May 12, 2019, 05:59:44 AM
Walmart and some other national chains have made headlines by raising their minimum wage to the $15+ range.
And they get glowing accolades from all the minimum wage advocates.

But guess what's happening?

For one thing, Walmart is rolling out a huge robotic program.  They have robots that autonomously scrub the floors.  No (minimum wage) human needed.
They have robots that wander the isles and look for merchandise that is out of place, or out of stock. They are tireless and largely error free.  No (minimum wage) human needed.

So Walmart and others can actually afford to set a minimum wage anywhere they want, and gain the liberal accolades, because they know they won't be needing to hire as many because robots are cheaper.

What price progress?  What do we do with those people that can no longer get minimum wage jobs away from the robots?  Where are young people going to get those entry level jobs to gain experience so that they can move up?  We better get ready to greatly enhance our "safety net" for the unemployable.

They are also starting to change hours. They are getting away from being open 24/7 in some areas, and may expand to the majority of their stores. Going to cut a lot of jobs to pay for those $15/hr employees.
