I saw this in the airport restaurant at KVRB (Vero Beach, FL today).

Coffee is literally the only reason I get up in the morning.

I start looking forward to the next morning’s coffee as soon as I finish the current morning’s coffee. Maybe even before.

YES!!  All the stuff I do during the day is just to kill time until I can go to sleep and then get up again for the coffee.

Well, a couple jiggers of single malt around 1945 does help my attitude. ;)

I once had a late-night coffee with liquor in it and had the best sleep of my life. Also, earlier that  evening, I completed a crossword puzzle, the Jumble, and the Cryptoquote (which I usually can’t do at all) in less than half an hour. I conclude that liquor with coffee is an amazing sharpener of one’s mental faculties as well as a promoter of restful sleep.

I can’t handle alcohol in any form. It makes me very happy and easily manipulated into bed by my husband, but only for about a 30 minute window, then I crash and have a hangover the whole next day.  One drink will do that to me.

I love the way coffee smells, but hate its taste.  Never acquired the taste for it... it tastes like it is, burnt beans.  I guess that comes from my first job as a dishwasher and had to clean out several huge kettles of burnt beans.  Also can't do alcohol.  Comes from being a little lad and was hospitalized with gastroenteritis.  They cleaned out my barf pan with alcohol.  Now I get all nauseated whenever I smell it.  But that does has its advantages.  I'm a cheap date and got invited to all sorts of parties where I was happy to be the designated driver.  But chocolate and Dr. Thunder are outstanding!

My husband is that way about coffee. Likes the way it smells but never could drink it.  I blame the fact that back when he was a child and young adult, most people didn’t make good coffee. It might smell good while brewing but they used pre-ground beans that were anything but fresh. What you buy in the grocery store could be months old. And they would let the coffee sit for hours when it must be drunk within minutes of brewing or the taste degrades fast.  And your equipment must be kept clean. Any residue quickly becomes rancid and ruins the the taste of subsequent brews.

I think people’s tastes are largely set in childhood, or as a teen or young adult at the latest.  If you decide you hate something when young, it is rare you can change that in later adulthood. You won’t even be inclined to give it a chance.

I have a friend who hated coffee.  But it was the thing at the company he worked for so he had to acquire the taste.  He started with a drop of coffee with lots of milk and sugar.  Then slowly adjusted the ratio until it was mostly coffee.  He still hates the stuff, but can make a tolerable mixture.

I had to laugh at that.  My Dad had a coffee percolator in his shop.  He did NOT like it when someone cleaned it...

I learned to like coffee in my early teens.  My stepfather would take me on week long hunting trips with a bunch of his friends.

We started the week with a fresh percolator (it was a huge percolator) with fresh coffee.  Rather than clean it, each morning they added a couple for scoops of coffee.  By the end of the week the stuff was nasty, but I liked it.  Probably not for the taste but drinking it with all those macho men made me feel macho.  It also made me appreciate the good coffee my mother made. And when I say "good" I am talking about what Rush described. Pre-ground grocery store coffee.

By the way, that is also how I learned to like beer and liquor.  But I didn't get any of that from my mother when we went home.

I learned to drink coffee… can’t really say “liked” at first, because it was bad restaurant coffee, when in college.  A group of friends hung out at a local restaurant in the afternoons near campus, between classes or job shifts, just drinking coffee, talking and smoking cigarettes.  It was peer pressure of course, they were all drinking coffee and so I had to too.  I tried the cigarettes too but they didn’t take.  I became violently allergic to them.

But the coffee habit stuck, probably for the caffeine boost at first. At my first job I drank it every morning for the caffeine although the office coffee was even worse than restaurant coffee.  When I learned how to make actually good tasting coffee it became a passion.  For a while I was roasting my own beans.

My mother got to where she never cleaned her coffee pot, just rinsed it. The brown stuff would build all up in it and when I visited I always had to scrub it out. She didn’t mind, she just wondered why on earth I was bothering.  She lost her sense of taste in her later years.

If cleaned improperly a percolator will make the coffee taste a little soapy for days.  Use of white vinegar is a good idea.

Don't know about that. I used to drink coffee "light and sweet" from the deli, which Starbucks and DD turned into an industry. Now it BLACK only, and the darker the roast the better.

When I was a kid, I wouldn't eat the sauce and cheese on a pizza. I would scrape it off and just eat the crust. In my teens and beyond I became a cheese pie connoisseur and NY pizza bigot.

Also, I would never eat broccoli, now I love it.

It’s just my theory. Based on such things like because my parents fed me escargot once as a kid, I would eat it today, but I won’t touch calamari because I was never exposed to it when young.

You can be retrained. Example, my husband hated Brussels sprouts.  When he was a kid his mother would make him eat them, but she boiled them into a soggy mess. Recently I started making them the right way, roasting in the oven until just tender enough, and seasoned properly, and now he likes them.  I’ll ever get him to like liver though.

Coffee flavored stuff, like candy, is good but I don’t like iced coffee.  Coffee as a beverage must be very hot. Just short of scorching and burning the skin off the roof of my mouth. Sometimes I miscalculate and have to walk around with a sore mouth all day.

Keeping it hot throughout the whole 14 oz mug and with adding cream, yet not brewing it with actual boiling water, is a challenge. It’s why I only use well insulated mugs and sometimes pre-warm the cream.  And why I drink it quickly.  When the last swallow gets lukewarm, it’s disgusting.

Oddly enough, my parents exposed me to the same things.  Escargot was just gross.  Probably because I watched it being prepared.  Seems to be just a vehicle for transporting butter and garlic.  Brussels sprouts are horrible no matter how they are prepared.  And liver... yuck.  All chalky and slimy.  Oysters... no way.  Although my father loved them, I remember him saying "I thought it was an oyster, but it's not"  (Pronounced "it's snot".)  I tried sushi to impress a date.  Never again.  When there are so many delightful foods out there, why?

My parents never served oysters.  But I tried them as a young adult, especially working as an intern at the coast, we’d all go eat seafood for lunch.  Loved them and then after I got married and we vacationed on Ocracoke, we would get oysters on the half shell at Howard’s Pub. Put one on a cracker, cover with Tabasco sauce, and chase with Anchor Steam draft.  To die for!  One of my rare exceptions to my “no alcohol” policy. I can’t do them raw though, they have to be steamed.

Ah...Tabasco sauce.  I remember it well from Vietnam days.  We would 'improve' the flavor of C-rats with it to the point of being edible.  My bottle was shattered once diving into a ditch and I was without for 3 days.  That was an emergency!

I was never in the military but years ago I would buy cases of MREs for emergency preparedness.  Some came with tiny little bottles of Tabasco sauce in certain ones, like with the chili or spaghetti.  They were so cute!  Some were actual military surplus and others were civilian MREs.  Can’t remember which ones came with the tiny bottles of Tabasco but I loved those.  That was later than Vietnam so I’m thinking you had a bigger bottle to carry around and didn’t get a teeny one in an individual meal.

I eventually switched to dehydrated food for emergencies, because long shelf life.  I wonder if the MREs still have the little glass Tabasco bottles?  Now I want to buy a case.

Every MRE I ate from the 90's until now had Tabasco. The bottles were replaced by squeeze packets I believe. You can still buy the tiny bottles in a 6 pack at stores like World Market. I get a pack for my wife for her Christmas stocking every year. I will amend my post from earlier about not consuming coffee if not in liquid form. I forgot I used to take the old MRE crackers and break them up. Then I would add a cocoa powder packet, sugar, creamer, coffee packets, and some water and mix it up into a pudding like substance. It was something different and a nice little pick me up during a dull day.

We would pick up our bottles of Tabasco sauce from either the PX or the chow hall IF they had any.  I think the military caught on and when they came out with MREs (stands for Meals Rejected by Ethiopians ;D) added it in.

Go for it. But please leave the Bonobos and red shanked doucs alone. The bonobos because they are peaceful and focus on shagging each other more than anything else, and doucs because they have badass coloration and stick to the jungle treetops and don’t bother humans.

Unlike macaques, filthy prolific vermin; rats with four opposable thumbs that invade people’s homes, raid pantries and kidnap and kill human newborns. You can kill as many of those as you like.

I guess the mountain gorilla is okay too. They just want to be left the hell alone to eat leaves and play with their little gorilla babies.

I had 3 big mugs today. I'm getting out of control.

So I did some quick math and I estimate that is 504 mg of caffeine. The FDA says you should consume no more than 400.  Okay, good, I'm not obeying the Feds.  Other research googling tells me that 500 mg of caffeine a day is associated with increased longevity, and a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, colon cancer, liver cancer and depression.  So there.

Over the years I have seen several talks and papers about this. Reasonable research on both the long term benefits and harms of using coffee.

Aside from the obvious acute effects - stimulation, headache on withdrawal, energy slump after use, and heart palpitations with high doses - the longer term effects are usually small and the research seems to go back and forth.  I am not at all surprised by this given the long history of use of this drug.

Personally I gave up coffee about 15 years ago after being stuck somewhere where the coffee was just awful by comparison to my usual at the time Peet’s French press. I stayed off because I prefer not having the afternoon slump after morning only use it interferes less with my sleep.
