As I often point out (but it gets me accused of trolling on PoA) a peer-reviewed review of the randomized clinical trials of the effect of the general public wearing cloth masks to prevent the spread of influenza like illnesses (Jefferson et al 2020) found that of 14 such trials none, that is 0 of 14, showed a statistically significant effect. They concluded that probably such mask usage provided little to no protection.
Bundgaard et al, the large Danish study which was concluded last year also failed to find a significant effect.
So while it sure seems like they should work based on intuition and laboratory studies say they should, the randomized trials show they don’t actually help much, if at all. This is a rather common result with proposed medical treatments.

I suspect the average person thinks they work. I mean it does honesty intuitively seem like it should work. And after all this message of mask up has even been on road signs incessantly over the last year.
Politicians inherently want to think that the use of government power, or forcible coercion, can fix the problem and that they can then be useful.
So when the it really seems like to should work and the data are not easily clear to people, their subconscious instinct will be to try and forcibly control.

They haven’t thought any of this through. It’s not rational. ALL of this could go away if people just refused to obey. It’s unenforceable. The lockdowns, the masks, all of it. The only reason they get away with it is too many people go along with it.

I am sad to say, many of today's citizens would rather be SUBJECTS than citizens and told what to do all the time. I've never seen such willful submissiveness in my entire life.

Me neither. We are in the middle of mass psychosis. Fear is used to turn people into mindless obedient automatons. Definition: don’t think for yourself. It doesn’t work on all of us but it works on enough to take control of the whole society. Exactly like the witch hunts of the 17th century, exactly. I naively thought modern man was too rational to fall for mass hysteria and to use it to oppress all dissenters. Look at Australia, it’s worse there right now.
