Title: Pee on my dishes
Post by: Rush on July 31, 2019, 10:04:05 AM
This is what the environmentalist wackos and government has done to the original dishwasher:

Quote
Modern U.S. dishwasher have very, very weak motors compared to machines of thirty years or so ago, because of U.S. Government energy use restrictions called “Energy Star” requirements. Instead of scrubbing dishes with high pressure water as older machines did, today’s machines basically just “pee” on your dishes. What a thirty year old dishwasher could do in 45 minutes, and do better, now takes two to three hours+ in modern machines.

In addition to that they took phosphates out of the detergent.

There's not even any point using the damn machine.  I'm just going back to hand washing. Don't get me started on clothes washers today. I'm in a mood.  >:(

So someone please tell me again about our "free market" system?

Almost everything the government touches turns into less efficient and more expensive consumer items.

A lot of energy and water saving appliances, and devices aren't effective as they used to be.  I don't like low flow toilets, nor low flow shower heads.  I am keeping my older Maytag washer/dryer as they work fine, and don't have all the complex bells and whistles. I am keeping by old Frig that doesn't tell me when I am low on milk as I can just look and figure that out for myself.  (I don't even drink milk)

Cars today are rolling technology centers with huge distracting displays, WIFI, computer processers, Radar, etc.  Don't like all that crap as it is just more to fail that I can't repair.  Young people don't care how the car drives, just so they can tether their phone, and get on the internet.  They don't want manual transmission either.  They can't drive them as they don't know how and don't want to learn.  They are afraid.

Oh yeah.  GET OFF MY LAWN!

otoh - there are some gadgets that provide some improved capability/performance over the old stuff (albeit at a cost).

Some of the stuff we can put in our cockpits can significantly lower pilot workload, right?  How many here would rather fly the old six-pack than the glass they have now?

I want a Toyota Landcruiser, the real Landcruiser that Toyota will not sell to the US market:

Diesel powered, rugged, dependable.  This model has been in production for 30 years.  Sold all over the world EXCEPT the US.  Why?

Toyota doesn't want to reengineer the truck to comply with US regulations.  And what does that entail?  Weakening the structure of the truck.  I kid you not.

These trucks are built heavy duty.  To comply with US laws, it would have to be weakened to make it crumple in certain crash scenarios, which just destroy this truck for what it was built for.

These are base utility vehicles, manual transmission, not lots of add ons. And they cost just around $30,000.

Free Market my ass.

The government hasn't mandated that glass cockpits have to be installed.  And the cost of those glass cockpits?   Think of the regulations that the manufacture jumped through for approval.

I want one also, except an updated FJ40 Land Cruiser, NOT an FJ Cruiser.  I still have my old Jeep TJ Wrangler which has become just a weekender at this point.  I'd love to get an old FJ40, or an updated one that would be more Jeep like than even the new Jeep.  :(

There are a lot of cool vehicles that don't make it here due to our over the top REGULATIONS.  Hey Don.  Cut some more stupid REGS!

Agree. I like my high speed internet better than the old dialup. That’s not the same thing as the government forcing technology backwards.

In the past year:

Our 3 year old dishwasher quit working.  The repair guy said it was the computer control module and a new one would be $600.  So we bought a new dishwasher instead.

Our 12 yr old double wall oven quite working and the guy said it was the computer control module, and if they still made them it would cost north of $750,  but they were unavailable, so we bought a new double oven.

Two weeks ago our 6 yr old whirlpool washing machine started turning up error codes every other washload.   We had to remove half the laundry and start it over, and it MIGHT work.   The repair guy said it was a water pump and a new one would be $400.  And we'd still have a 6 yr old washing machine.  So we bought a new one.

I'm not sure I can blame the government for this, but it still sucks.

At least the Fridge still works. (can't find a "fingers crossed" emoji).

Speaking of refrigerators, just yesterday I had to melt all the ice caked around our icemaker with a hair dryer because they didn't design the insulation correctly and it keeps blocking up and failing. We just bought this house with this fridge, and the sellers left us receipts for having already, in 9 years, replaced that icemaker TWICE.  A nine year old fridge. The house we left had a 22 year old fridge still going strong original ice maker and all.  I wish we had taken that thing with us.

There was a book on Fox recently called "Socialism Sucks".  The book was written by two economist about beer in Cuba, North Korea and Venezuela, the only three real socialist countries in the world.  Their conclusions were that the government has no incentive to do more than the minimum necessary.  In Cuba there are two beers and both taste skunky and NK was similar.  Why would you make more than two types of beer?  In Venezuela, they have no beer...well, because the government cannot buy barley grain.  They can barely buy wheat for bread, so barley for beer is way out.

Maybe this is the way to convince the millennials that  socialism is bad?  Because all the micro breweries will be shut down and they'll be left with no real beer choices.  The only trouble I see is that they're so ingrained in socialism, they won't believe factual evidence.  But bottom line if the government can't even make beer well, why would they be able to do anything else well?

For me, "Socialism" always morphs into the State controlling everything to the point of Oppression of people in a Totalitarian manner.  The elite, connected people get whatever they want, but they are relatively few in number.  The majority of people live in misery with no hope of advancement, nor improving their lives.

The first thing they always do is to disarm the law abiding citizens.  That is why we have a constant push to do that here.  Statists, and Globalists hate they citizens can legally defend themselves.  As I have stated elsewhere in another thread, many in law enforcement, government and our judicial system do NOT like that we can own, and carry guns legally.

To understand why socialism doesn’t work you have to understand why free market competition does, and to understand that you have to have a grasp of realistic human behavior. You have to be able to extrapolate from the micro to the macro. You can’t be seduced by false premises, such as the idea that people are evolving to be less territorial or less greedy, or even just that they should.

My dishwasher does just fine thank you, and if it does it with less water and less energy than so much the better.  Won't last like the old ones, but what does?  What really sticks in my craw is I have to replace the old GE fridge we've had for 20 years with a new one, because the old one is the wrong color.  Don't get me started, the things I do to stay married.  Were there a GE fridge I could buy I'd do so in a heartbeat, but there ain't.  So I've forked out an obscene amount of money for a fridge that probably won't last as long as the old one.

Most millennials drink IPA, and that is more hops based than barley. They won't care.

Yep.  We've had a Micro Brew explosion in my area.  You can't spit and not hit a micro brewery that serves "craft beer".  I am sure this is happening all over, and is quite the fad.

As you say the younger folks drink IPA's.  If you go into one of these micro breweries they will often have five or six different varieties of IPA's, then a limited number of other styles of beers.  I don't like IPA's as they are too Hoppy to me, but can usually find an Ale, or Lager that's drinkable.

We have one little town near me that has six microbreweries in the downtown, and two on the outskirts.  It's nuts, but I like good beer once in a while, so that's fine with me.

That’s like Hops and Props at the EAA Museum every March. Over 100 breweries, and some can’t get out of their way to make their beers more hoppy. The must common question was certainly “Which ones aren’t too hoppy?”

The late 60's and early 70's had to be the ugliest time period for design.  My mother did the entire family room in burnt orange thick carpet (not shag thankfully), and "Mediterranean" style cabinets and furniture.  Covering beautiful, hardwood floors.  Fortunately, it was just one room.  I think we had an avocado fridge though.

Ditto across the board. We had a matador and conquistador lamp on two tables in our living room!  Smh. Dining room set was big and heavy Spanish-style crap. How about shag carpeting in the walls of the bathroom?  Yes, she had it. Fortunately that was good insulation when I’d take the Sears catalog into the bathroom.

I live in a very affluent area.  I'm not bragging as it was more rural when I bought the property 21 years ago, so has morphed into McMansion yuppie land since.  Porsche Cayennes, Range Rover/Land Rovers, large Lexus SUV's, etc are the norm for good looking, youngish wives wearing tight jeans and high heels.  But, you're correct the Toyota Land Cruiser and Sequoia is right up there.

I have an older two door, manual transmission Jeep Wrangler TJ that is now more a weekend vehicle for me.  It has largely become an anachronism which is fine by me.  You can't get a simple, no frills, manual tranny vehicle without multi function displays and all kinds of extras.  Just doesn't exist anymore.  I'd love for Toyota to make an actual FJ40 again.  (rant over)

So in addition to no water and less energy, current dishwashers are not allowed to use phosphate detergent. But we can keep one step ahead of the tyrants by using something OTHER THAN dishwasher detergent. A few years ago you could get "Cascade Professional" dishwasher detergent which still contained phosphates.

Apparently they had to crack down on that. Cascade pulled the product. But they have rebranded it "Cascade Fryer Boil Out".  At first it had instructions where you can use it in your dishwasher too. But now they have removed those instructions. But it's still got the same ingredients.

Wow. The lengths they are going to stop us from using good detergent or getting our dishes clean.  I just ordered the last 2 in stock from one supplier on Amazon. My dishes are coated with crud at the end of the cycle. I've tried everything. We will see how this works.

Just FYI, you can order food-grade trisodium phosphate (TSP) from Amazon (seems TSP is used as a food additive and also a supplement by some - see Wikipedia for details.)  Add about half a teaspoon with regular machine dishwasher soap.

Although we have some cloudy glasses from a bad run with a dishwasher at our new rental home, adding the TSP didn’t clear up the cloudiness. Applying white vinegar and letting sit a minute followed by some rubbing with paper towels cleared up the cloudy glasses.

I'll try the vinegar. Also the internet says I can put 1 gallon of white vinegar in the dishwasher with no dishes and run a normal cycle. Do that a few times to get the white crud out of the machine.
