For the sake of discussion, let's stipulate that the NY Times did in fact knowingly and malicously publish lies.

My quesiton is:  what in God's name would President Trump actually gain by the suit?

We already know the lies, but the never-trumpers won't believe that the NY Times actually lied.

What is the upside of the suit?

It’s one thing for the president to say they lied. People will believe that or not largely depending on the jersey they are wearing.

Say so in court, and it raises the level of confidence that what the plaintiff is saying is accurate.

Or he may him just be trolling the shit out of the NYT.

Look at the web site of the lawyer filing the case: https://www.harderllp.com/ (https://www.harderllp.com/)
They've already won defamation and other cases for the president and other public figures.
They specialize in this type of thing.
So I'd hazard a guess they think they have a pretty good case.

He’s fighting back. I love it.  He’s not lying down and taking it from these fucking rags. About time somebody put them in their place. Did you catch what he said at the news conference tonight? “There will be more!”

I agree.  After the he was acquitted I thought that now things will be getting very interesting.
