Title: Vans Aircraft high wing RV-15
Post by: Jim Logajan on July 09, 2022, 07:58:49 PM
Video of test flight of their RV-15. Personally would have preferred a cantilevered high-wing to go with their cantilevered low-wings. Strutted high wing designs are a dime a dozen.

The nose wheel is on the wrong end

Haha! It is. And struts make me feel safer. Now I’m girding myself  8) for Jim to post stats on cantilever vs strut failure.

So Vans is building a Cessna clone.

How exciting……….  :-\

I thought the same thing.

I wonder if this Skyhawk wannabe will be at OSH in 2 weeks.

I've always respected what Van's has done for homebuilding and the GA community, but always thought their planes were a little ugly looking. Like that was the best design for a nosewheel? And they look godawful goofy looking as a taildragger. I won't knock their performance, though. Guess you can't have it all.

I haven’t flown an RV, but working Flightline Ops at OSH and seeing these RVs up close and personal trying to hit the orange or green dots is something to behold. With those short wings, they all seem to come in hot, and all bounce at least once, especially the taildragger RVs.

I knew of a FAASTeam rep that wrecked her RV into a parked car landing at Wag Aero years ago.

I’m not Jim and I have no stats but I would guess they are equally “safe”.  It’s a trade off between drag and weight, not an issue of strength.  They design it to the same safety factor I would imagine.  Struts mean less material is needed, but more hanging out in the wind.  Disclaimer:  not an aerospace engineer so wdik.

Looks a lot like the Cessna Skycatcher

I'm not Rush, but what she wrote sounds about right to me.

It's probably a really good bush plane.

Looks kind of boxy which is a good thing for homebuilders.  The cabin seems claustrophobic with the tiny side windows but the skylights help.  No door does help with ventilation and visibility  :).  That huge tail could be an issue in a crosswind.  I can't really tell from the video, and can't find other pictures, it looks like the flaps have a gap when retracted or it could be a reflection.  Don't know but it does seem like it would be a good bush plane.  Totally not sexy, but cheap and easy to build, lots of utility.  I'm looking forward to seeing it at OSH.

I never thought of the flyswatter.
Overpriced and under powered.
Flimsy at best.

Tailwheels are the way to go, however, so...

I've flown in two RVs, both 6's.  What a hoot!  Fast and aerobatic, I don't think I'd like the situation if the mill quit (things seemed to sink fast with no power).  After I get the Mooney sold I'm hoping to setup a club to build one.
