Title: LOOK OUT! He doesn't have a mask!
Post by: President-Elect Bob Noel on April 28, 2020, 06:19:14 AM
run away run away run away run away.

LOCK THEM UP!

Some cities in Massachusetts have put in place ordinances that require wearing a mask in public, with up to a $1000 fine for violations.

Today's Boston Herald's frontpage has a picture of Somerville mayor Curtatone "wearing" a mask.... around his neck.

I have no doubt that curtatone doesn't have an f'n clue regarding mask use protocol.

I'm going to be just a liiiiiiitle bit of a contrarian here.  Just a little.

Publix has senior shopping hours from  7am to 8am before opening the store to the general public.   I like to go at that time because I am an early bird and like to get the shopping over with early.  My wife likes me to go at that time because they spent the night sanitizing the store.  After all, us seniors are the highest at-risk group.

So it griped me this morning when I saw a bunch of (possibly) seniors (they don't check IDs) go in the store without wearing a mask.  The theory is to protect us weak and vulnerable old people.  In this case, if people want to take advantage of special shopping hours, they should be required to wear a mask.

I think this is totally reasonable for people AT RISK like Seniors and the Infirm.  If we let everything remain open and just quarantined them, this would have never happened.  In my area it is not the government enforcing this rule it is the STORES refusing service.  Enter with no mask, and NO groceries.

I wanted to go to Walmart early today to get there before the 6 foot apart line forms out front but overslept and only now just woke up and now I am all behind and the whole day is messed up.

I can understand the concern (I'm old enough to qualify for the early hours).

My counter to the wear-a-mask hysteria:  the general public is completely ignorant with respect to the proper method to wear a mask and the necessary hand discipline to make a mask effective.

The N95 mask (which we are told should be reserved for medical professionals) is the only mask that provides better than 60% filtering effectiveness (it is something like 97%).  Other masks provide some filtering for inhalation and much much less filtration for exhalation.  In other words, they leak and leak badly.

For kicks and giggles, watch people who wear a mask.  Look at the number of people that leave the nose exposed, look at the number of people who pull the mask down and then put it back, look at the number of people who touch their face and/or mask... repeatedly.  All of these actions greatly reduce the already low low low effectiveness of wearing masks in public.

Requiring people to wear pink running shoes would be just about as effective.

I don't care if they touch themselves.  The masks aren't designed to protect them.  They are designed to protect me, so as long as they are wearing the mask when they sneeze of cough, I am good.

That might be even more effective.  I'm not sure I would go to the store at all wearing pink running shoes.

I do think wearing a mask is akin to "Health THEATER", just like the TSA at airports is Security Theater.  People at risk should probably stay home, and have groceries and other essentials delivered but that should not be mandatory nor mandated by government.

I totally agree. I get it if you want to not infect others, but in my mind, you have no business going out shopping if you’re sick, period.

As for protecting yourself, these cloth masks people are wearing is a joke. The humidity from your breath creates a moist field right in front of your mouth and nose, so if you DO walk through someone’s sneeze cloud, instead of just passing through, the germs will be stuck on that moist section in front of your nose and mouth, allowing you to continue to inhale the germs for as long as you are wearing it.

Viral Theater.

Think about it.  This is how government deals with everything.  After 9/11 we had draconian “security” imposed on everyone. “But we’re doing this to protect the public”.  So GWB creates the TSA (thousands standing around) made up of $15/hour people, who half look like they came straight from the bus station, and have them grope 80 year old women and little kids.  All theater and totally ineffective.

But hey, at least Trump didn’t intern all Chinese Americans like FDR did to the Japanese Americans.

If he did "intern" them, he'd have to keep them away from Bill Clinton.  LOL!    ;D

But, seriously.  No tickee, no laundry.

How about those 6 to 10 days between the time you become infected and the time you display symptoms.  Or if you never display symptoms but are still spreading germs.

Do you and Bob Noel expect to live out the rest of your life with the rest of society mandated to walk around in a hazmat suit so you’re precious body doesn’t inhale some germ?

We all need a reality check. Every single prediction, from Dr. Fouce to the WHO to other “public health professionals” have been wildly wrong by orders of magnitude. Most people won’t get this. Most people who get it won’t be sick. Most people who do get sick won’t die. Most people who do die have an unrelated serious health condition which contributed if not caused their death.

If this is so terrible, why hasn’t The Villages been wiped out?  They seem to pass every STD around that place, so why not this?

We likely will never get a vaccine against this virus, and the talk about having one in 18 months is wishful thinking.

The only thing that will minimize this effect on the world is herd immunity, and this shelter at home to flatten the curve thing will probably delay herd immunity from happening. We are treating this differently than every other pandemic in human history. Why?  Because Trump used the word “pussy?”

And understand this is coming from a germaphobe. I’ve had colds, flu, and even pneumonia disrupt my life during the busiest time of my year, tax season. So I take reasonable precautions like avoiding door handles when possible, touching commonly touched things, and used hand sanitizer before using hand sanitizer was cool. I’m not stupid, and after this most people will be more careful in general.

Gloves are another good one.  Stores say they are wearing them for our safety.  Then you watch them wear one pair all shift and cross contaminate everything.

um, I think you've been misunderstanding my many posts on this subject.. starting with my disgust with the COVID-19 panic while the same people completely ignore influenza.

ok, I probably should have used green color font a lot more than I have.

edit:  precisely because I'm old, I don't want to live my remaining years in a bubble or cowering at home.  I retired so I can enjoy living.

I doubt it.

After it becomes obvious to even the dullest moron that there has been a gross overreaction, it will be harder to implement measures if we ever face a real serious pandemic.

on second though, the morons in our society probably won't catch on...

It turns out I missed the portion of the Taxachusetts Governor's "guidance" that specifies a fine of up to $500 or imprisonment or both for violating the "guidance" on social distancing.

Good grief.

I guess what I’m getting at is I think people will be very slow to get back to normal in terms of jamming restaurants and bars, and other places with obvious close interaction, mostly out of irrational fear. It may take months, but hopefully we will get there as soon as possible.

Sorry Bob. My mistake. I mistook your response to Joe about wearing masks and spreading influenza to spreading Coronavirus.

Yes, green would have been better for this brain tired CPA!

I think you are right. For one thing, the restaurants are opening at only 25% capacity at first. People are used to cooking at home and living more frugally. It may be a long time before the economy comes “roaring back”.

I’m seeing some other very disturbing signs with respect to food, oil, healthcare, well a lot of things. My husband says I’m too pessimistic but I am getting a real bad feeling.

Look, here is the thing: all this social distancing has prevented us from getting herd immunity. Now we are reopening but without herd immunity so the cases are going to continue on and on and any uptick is going to result in new restrictions. Plus extreme contact tracing measures being put in place which will never go away. All of this is going to be brought out again every time a new virus comes along. The next swine flu, the next MERS the next SARS. We are going to be expected to wear masks all the time now. And we still aren’t letting ourselves get herd immunity so the threat will never go away, and this is the new norm? The new way to handle viruses? It’s so abnormal. It is not at all the way a species is designed to handle these things.

There will always be one contagious pathogen or other hanging around to fear, and we are being conditioned to accept all these new behaviors as they keep extending the lockdown, or reopening in such half assed ways that it will take years for the economy to recover, and it will not be able to before the next virus comes along.

This is leading us straight into a cage. Totalitarian control of our lives.

That is perhaps the most disturbing thing about this. That people are cowering in obedience as the economy is being destroyed, many unaware of the destruction because the news doesn’t tell them and they are still getting deliveries and enjoying the Internet.

We don’t actually need permission to reopen the economy. If we all simply did so, mass civil disobedience, there would be nothing they could do about it, they cannot jail everyone. But only a few brave souls defy them, like this guy:

The totally sad and pathetic thing is how quickly the economy has been destroyed, AND with virtually no pushback from citizens or any people formerly known as conservatives.

Finally, 6-7 weeks into this, Bill Barr is telling US attorneys to start looking for violations of the Constitution. Thanks a lot, but START?  Have you not been looking into this since the first stay at home order, since Easter literally was crushed by state governments?

Join or Die. We are at that point. And once again, only 3% of the population will be willing to do anything about it.

Look, here is the thing: all this social distancing has prevented us from getting herd immunity.

I believe this was packaged in and sold as a way to keep this thing going.  Before this, no one heard of "social distancing" and the experts all agree this does little to control the virus (of any kind) and in fact prolongs the virus.

I'm just waiting to see Fauci and Birx get their multi million dollar book deals.  They are now icons of the progressives.
