Who actually owns Pilots of America? Is there a non-profit? Or a sole proprietor?
Quick search of IRS charities does not produce anything.
-
Did Chuck Heberle sell it? He got out of aviation a decade or so ago if memory serves, but a far left Progressive if there ever was one. Seems to be a trend with these types owning aviation websites. See The Pilots Place for the latest example.
-
Charles Heberle the UA captain? Not seeing any connection online between him and PoA. I believe it was set up by a bunch of the early members and Ted ? Was a big part of it. But I am wondering now about the current corporate form, if any.

Apparently there was a discussion in 2009 with user Greebo about it over there. Does someone want to ping Greebo or ask about it openly? I would but I am banned for the week.

Being banned is like having covid at your age, you will get over it.

Haha. Thanks. I’m sure of that.
But I am curious about this now. And one of my traits is tend to research on a thing until my curiosity is satisfied.

I have an account on PoA but haven’t logged into it in many moons. Back when I was more active there I asked about the then-claimed non-profit status and where or how it was registered. This provoked paranoid responses that presumed I was up to no good (they were partially correct and partially wrong - like you I was curious because of the infantile way they acted towards other posters - I was not even a target of their ire.) I never got a useful response. After a while I silently took my business to forums like this one and purpleboard.net.

This is interesting

I tried that also. It is basically redacted for privacy. A bit puzzling for a nominally public organization, but not unusual. Strange there isn’t an official corporate address that this could be put in.
I doubt they are a formal 501 (c) 3 though I suppose it could be under a weird name.
The curious thing is that in the RoC and TOS there they keep referring to “we” but never actually define who that is.

I did not know PoA had a Facebook page until now. It lists a Nebraska address but that appears to belong to Jesse Angell. Back when he was (and may still be) the (or a) tech admin for the site.

Doh! Back in 2015 I managed to determine that Pilots of America is registered in Pennsylvania: https://www.pilotsofamerica.com/community/threads/for-the-mc.87214/#post-1928053 (https://www.pilotsofamerica.com/community/threads/for-the-mc.87214/#post-1928053)
Just type in their name here to see they have two entities now incorporated:

George Soros owns it.

Thanks Jim. Just ordered several of the documents there. They have two PA non-profits but these have not been classified as 501(c)3 per the IRS.
From prior threads on PoA, it appears the MC may be the board of directors as well.

Best of luck.

Greebo is Chuck Heberle, an IT guy not a UA captain.

Before seeing this post I checked the IRS non-profit look-up site and there’s nothing similar to Pilots of America registered as a non-profit.

I don’t think you have to register with the IRS if you collect no money.
-
You only need to register with the IRS if you want to officially be a 501 non-profit, in order to allow your contributors to claim a tax deduction.
