I was listening to a podcast and the speaker was asked a question and she started to respond with "oh boy, that..." and woman asking the question quickly interjected "girl"

I started a recommendation letter with "Gentlemen", and was accused of gender bias by someone in the medical school.  I kid you not.

Yeah, that's kind of tacky and you should know that.  It's like addressing a letter "Dear Sir".  Just not done in business today or for the last 50 years.  "To whom it may concern" is the better route unless you KNOW who the letter is going on.
