A little something to cleanse your soul after seeing the GOP crash and burn last Friday.

No disprespect intended to the great man, but once he got in office, he spent like a drunken sailor. Outspent prev administrations by a fair sum. On the plus side, his profligate spending ended the cold war, destroyed the Soviet empire, and eventually opened east europe. A good value to be sure, but then Clinton squandered the peace dividend that Reagan and Bush I created. And damn Bush I for increasing taxes when he promised not to. It was stupid, and fatal to the conservatives.

To be fair, Reagan never had a Republican House if Representatives. Tip O’Neill was Speaker for 7 out of 8 years under Reagan, and was no slouch of a negotiator. True, to outspend the USSR Reagan had to agree to O’Neill’s terms, which of course included a lot of spending. Yes, Reagan signed the law. But he didn’t ask to grow the non-military parts of government.

I thought you were old enough to remember the real reasons Reagan had to allow the Democrat majority to spend more money than he wanted.  I guess not.

GET OFF MY LAWN KID!

For starters, Reagan extracted a promise from the Dem majority to cut expenses in return for his tax cuts.  The cuts in spending never came.

For all the things blamed on Ronald Reagan, spending is among the least honest.

He never had a single one of his budgets get passed. O'Neill and the democrat congress refused to give him an inch, yest blamed him for everything they spent money on. The hypocrisy of the press during the time of Reagan was epic, but not quite as dishonest as the DNC media today.

My memory is prolly fading. I thought SDI, huge sub fleet expansion, and serious ramped up Shuttle program were pretty much all Reagan. As I recall, he set out to BK the Soviets, and accomplished that through massive increases in defense. And sure, the Dems got everything they wanted too.

But, maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, Reagan did BK the Soviets, he did get the wall torn down, and he did ultimately see a free eastern EU. So, maybe whomever decided to spend all that money got a good value.
