Title: Total deaths US for 2020 Feb/Mar vs 2019?
Post by: lowtimer on April 05, 2020, 09:42:25 AM
I'm curious what the difference in total US deaths between Feb/Mar 2019 and 2020 is.

I'm not coming up with the numbers searching, anyone with better Google Fu than I  able to come up with it?

Do you mean normal annual FLU deaths versus Corona Virus deaths?

Quote
CDC estimates that influenza has resulted in between 9 million – 45 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths annually since 2010.

Total deaths for those months.

I'm looking for how many more total deaths this year.

You are unlikely to find death statistics for any portion of 2020 since places like the CDC don’t collate them until a year or so after the fact. Here is a CDC stats page on deaths:
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/deaths.htm (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/deaths.htm)

Probably simplest to divide the 2017 death stats by 12 to get a monthly estimate. If most of the ~9000 Covid-19 deaths were in Feb and Mar, then I’d guess the death rate for those months is around 2% higher than they would otherwise be.

[Edited to correct Covid-19 deaths. Accidentally had initially used worldwide deaths in computing percentage rather than only U.S.]

That would be an interesting comparison.

https://www.econjobrumors.com/topic/breaking-10000-fewer-weekly-deaths-in-march-2020-than-the-same-time-last-year

This site claims 10,000 fewer deaths in March due to people being at home part of the month.  I expect it will be and even larger number for April because March is only a partial month.

Hospitals say that non covid emergency visits are down 35+% and trauma ER doctors are losing hours.  There are almost no car accidents and violent crime is down in most places.

It's quite possible that CV-19 has overall resulted in fewer deaths, it has happened before during disasters.

"Summary

In 2018, a total of 2,839,205 resident deaths were registered in the United States—25,702 more deaths than in 2017."

Odds are there won't be that big an uptick.  More dying from the virus, but that may be offset by all the folks not getting into traffic accidents not driving to work.

A friend of mine had to go to the ER yesterday for stitches because she cut her finger slicing vegetables. She said there were absolutely no other patients in the ER at that time. This is in a city in Southeast Wisconsin with a population of 100,000 people, half way between Milwaukee and Chicago.

Given the population of Wisconsin and the number of reported cases in the state (~2300), I wouldn't expect the place to be crowded

The Milwaukee metro area has been rated multiple times over the recent years as one of the top 10 most violent cities in the nation. This is just the lull before the storm. Wait until things get opened again and the weather gets warmer.

Milwaukee metro and Madison are state hotspots and are pretty densely crowded.  The rest of the state is nice and sparse.  I'm amazed at how the corridor between Milwaukee and Chicago is getting filled up.  Used to be just the Cheese Castle there.  Now all sorts of industry.

Yep. Yesterday I took a drive and the boat launch near Hogg’s Alley was jammed, and the local frozen custard place was jammed, and the temperature was just 51.

Wisconsinites will not be denied our already short spring or summer.
