Post by: texasag93 on January 30, 2023, 09:44:00 AM: I was eating breakfast at in Denton with my son.

There was a table of college kids having a normal college conversation about classes and traveling. There were music majors from University of North Texas (very liberal college in Denton) in the group as they were talking about playing piano in different places in Europe.

As we were leaving, a girl in the group said something about something on her phone, and said in a loud voice, 'That is SO white!'. The look on her face was that of horror, like she had said the n work our loud. The group did not know how to react.

I said in a just as loud voice...."Oh my god, shame on you for saying that!' and started smiking.

The entire table burst out in laughter. I am glad they can laugh at themselves and realize how funny it was that she almost offended herself by referencing whiteness.

Post by: Jim Logajan on January 30, 2023, 11:25:10 AM: I first heard the phrase "That's white of him" in the 1980s from a boss who flew bombers in WWII (he had hired a pilot friend who flew fighters and they used to playfully ridicule each other's abilities.) Anyway, it has nothing to do with race so far as I know. Just a way to approve of someone's actions - perhaps sarcastically? Not sure if the girl had picked it up from a parent or grandparent and was using it in that way or something similar.

I remember hearing that phrase for the first time as a kid when we moved to the South. I wonder if the movie started it or if it was already in existence and the movie brought attention to it.

It was not the movie.

The people I heard say it when I was a kid never saw that movie.

That being said, are we allowed to say 'White Hat' in IT circles anymore? I have been out of that realm for a few years.

I’ve heard that phrase many times, but I never even heard of that movie. I looked it up and I think it’s a movie I would really like.
