I fly an Aerostar 600--it's a responsive, fun airplane.  You ought to go give one a spin sometime.  Or maybe not a literal spin, but a whirl.  ;)

I was just sure some smart alack was going to post something like...

"Tip:  Do whatever it takes to keep the little wheel behind you at all times."

:)

It's a good book to dive into and get tailwheel info.

I don't know if I know you or you me, but I'm a CAF Check Pilot for a PT-26 in the Indiana Wing, and I fly a T-6 as well, AT-6D, though that's not a Wing airplane.  I also do tailwheel instruction in a 7EC with a 65 hp engine (and a J-3) out of a grass strip (though we go to pavement too-it's important).  You'll find the PT-26 with its wide sturdy gear to be more stable and easier than the Champ, just heavier, (but don't worry, the Champ is not tricky).   I'd be happy to answer whatever questions I can, but your CFI will probably hit the high points. If not feel free to yell and I'm sure you'll get more folks with more advice than you know what to do with.  ;)

The checkout process in the PT isn't overly complicated, there is a checklist of items you have to do with your instructor, slow flight, various stalls, engine out, various takeoffs and landings, etc., and then they call a check pilot to come in and do the "check ride" over each of those maneuvers as well, to Commercial standards.  Then done.  The SNJ, that one you'll find a more interesting challenge--great airplane, a lot of fun!

Garmin Pilot has a "NRST" button at the top of its map page, and when you click on it, it immediately shadows down the map and highlights the airports nearest to your current position.  Even the little grass strips that aren't on the IFR map will suddenly show up on your map clear as a bell even if you're on an L-chart instead of a sectional.  Then you just click on the closest airport to you, tap once, and it will draw a line for you, tell you what heading to go to, how many miles away it is, draw out the extended centerlines of the runway, and bring the name and info up at the top of your page so one more tap on that will give you the field elevation, frequency, runway numbers and lengths, and pattern altitude at once glance.  It's pretty handy.  If ForeFlight doesn't have something like that, they probably will soon.

Thanks for the welcomes--and to sort of halfway provide input on the actual topic of the thread, something I like about both this and the POA sites is that when you go to upload an avatar, you don't have to screw around and resize to something like 100x100 or 150x150 like a couple other boards.  You can upload an actual photo, move it around and be done.  Handy.

Crab stuffed tilapia, steamed mussles, a tasty white wine, and a lovely cheesecake for dessert, and I'm still full.  I may be too old for that much food now, but I don't regret it yet. ;)

The stats also say that we have a 19:1 male:female ratio which means there should be 8 women here but I only hear from Becky. Do we have anyone confused over here?

I'm here, but have just lurked as time permitted.  Suppose now that I hit "post" I can be counted as one of the 8 women who should be here.  ;)
