"It's called unnecessary idling and Ann Arbor cops will soon be enforcing in a whole new way. Considered a civil infraction, commercial drivers can no longer leave a vehicle idling unoccupied - or occupied for more than 5 minutes.

The 5 minute rule also applies to other drivers, but people are urged to cut off their engines after 10 seconds.

It's not just cars or trucks. The new rule applies to any vehicle with an internal combustion engine."

Aircraft too, apparently.

They would be better off fining the guys that fuck up the traffic signals that cause dozens of cars to wait at red lights while there is NO cross traffic.  Then, when a car finally does come towards the solo green light, it changes just before they get there.

I thought it was harder on a Diesel engine to shut down and restart than to let it idle for the ten or fifteen minutes you take a break and anyway I thought truckers idled for heat it air while stopped.

They always manage to find and interview people who support stupid ordinances.

"They're hoping this will help cut down on lung disease, asthma and emphysema."

That's a hope that is as likely to be realized as a herd of unicorns showing up in the local park.

There is a local highway that remained unfinished for at least 25 years.  The inner suburbs didn't want it because the traffic would cause more pollution.  They compromised to get it through so the thee lanes pinches down to two lanes at a certain point.  This causes traffic jams, and cars to sit an idle causing more "pollution".  Maybe they should raise the minimum wage too?
