Title: Insect lollipops
Post by: Rush on June 29, 2023, 05:19:15 PM
I saw these for real at the Natural History Museum last week.  The bug inside is REAL.

Reminds me of the Monty Python "crunchy frog" skit.

We eat crustaceans all the time, lobsters and crabs, and they're just jumped up insects.  There are cultures where insects are a nutritious treat.  Not that I plan on doing it any time soon...

I can't even eat the damn seafood, aggravates my gout.

Crawfish meat looks about the size I imagine the meat of a large cockroach is.  I am well aware crustaceans are related to insects. Basically bugs of the sea.

All my Louisiana friends call crawfish mud bugs. But they taste great.

Yeah we call them mud bugs too.  I have to mow over a billion mud bug volcanoes as they set up home in our yard.

I just can't do it.  Give me a steak vs. a pile of some kind of larvae.  Shrimp are great.  Lobster is wonderful (out of the shell).  Crabs as long as they are meat is really really good.  But food should not look like the animal it came from.  No way can I eat head-on shrimp.  Or soft shell crabs. Or a plate of little crawly things.  Food should look like food, not animals.

Yeah.  I know.  Doesn't make sense. But I expect to be adding a lot to the wood smoke in the air over the next couple of days tending the BBQ.

How about those Chinese dishes where they fry the body of the fish leaving the head out and serve it still alive with its face gaping at you?

No no no no no.  Just no.  Or those trout plates with the head still on and the fins sticking out.  (Or the Christmas Story ending with the duck head... funny but eech.)  Give me a good tuna steak.  Or fillet of something. Please disassemble the chicken before cooking. If it looks like an animal, it's not food.  It's fried roadkill.

And cook the steak medium well.  No pink.  Raw is for cannibals.  And don't even get me started on sushi.  (Tried it for the first and only time because a date insisted.  Ug.  It didn't help that I thought the green stuff was actually food.  Nope.  DO NOT eat a chunk of the wasabi.)  Food should not look like the animal it came from.

Pink on the inside but NO RED STUFF RUNNING ALL OVER THE PLATE.  Blech.  If blood gets into my veggies I won’t eat them.

Looks like you need to build some berms, flood your yard, and start harvesting.

Be a crawfish farmer, that’s what I need in my life.  ;D

This is how I like it. Medium, but pink in the middle. A bone in "tomahawk" wagu fillet is the best.

I’m putting this here to coordinate with “things they’d like to see jammed down our throats.”

Just let them marry.
Force bakers and florists to serve them.
Throw full weight of state law against businesses that respectfully decline to serve them.
Give them their own month to parade nude in America’s streets. Don’t enforce indecent exposure laws.
Pass laws allowing children to decide to mutilate themselves without their parents’ consent.
Pass laws forcing people to use certain pronouns or be accused of hate speech.
Put flags representing sexual deviance, mutilation and child grooming in schools and public buildings.
Put mentally ill men pretending to be women into women’s sports and changing rooms and restrooms.
Allow children to attend lewd adult drag shows and act outraged when normal people object.

And now this, a logical next step.

Allow kids to get plenty of viewing of adult genitalia SO THEY’RE NOT SHOCKED BY SEEING TRANS PEOPLE NUDE IN CHANGING ROOMS AND RESTROOMS.

Anyone who thought it all was harmless and couldn’t get worse should be waking up right now.

Thomas Sowell said many years ago and I’m not going to go re-read all his books to find the exact quote, but it was something like this: When an oppressed people finally rise to equality they always go on to exceed it and become the new oppressors.  We see this now in South Africa where it is unsafe to be a white person. Probably the greatest most obvious example is feminism, and in that case women weren’t even oppressed by men; it was their own biology.  But they framed men as the oppressors and now have become dominant in board rooms and politics and are culturally and legally crushing men’s rights. Actively discriminating against them, perpetrating all kinds of false me-too allegations, demonizing their natural masculine traits, etc.

This does not mean that we shouldn’t correct wrongs. It means we will probably always have to deal with the overcorrection fallout, then it goes back the other way and so on forever and ever amen.

We see this right now in the rise of “hypermasculinity” which is becoming misogynistic. Women need to be stay at home mothers; if you want a career you hate your children, women need to be “submissive” to men, and the ultimate anti-woman misogyny: trans men invading women’s private spaces.  All of this is a direct reaction to feminism but just as deplorable.

Same with gay/trans rights.  They didn’t stop at let them marry and quit beating them up and leaving them to die in the woods (like my friend).  Things had just gotten to where America was pretty much live and let live as long as you don’t try to force it down our throats pun intended.  And then they pushed it.  So now we have to backlash against that because they’re going way too far. The radical gay/trans activists are going to bring about the same homophobia they had just escaped since the turn of the century.

Oppressed groups will always overreach and become the new oppressors, whether they succeed or get smashed by a new backlash hardly matters. As humans we will always be at each other’s throats, hating each other for whatever reason real or made up in our minds. It’s in our DNA. Form group identities then de-humanize and persecute anyone outside your group. It’s what we do. It will end for each of us when we shuffle off this mortal plane and not before.

“From each according to his ability to each according to his need.”

The foundation of leftism.  Trouble is, it’s totally against human nature. In a system like that, people are incentivized to be “needy” and disincentivized to produce.  Dwindling production leads to catastrophe.  Those who preach it know this very well, but put themselves in charge, exempting themselves, and living well while the masses starve.  Inevitability they turn to capitalism of a corrupt sort to avoid total collapse of the society, they must be brutally authoritarian to forestall rebellion, and they force “private” businesses to bow to the Party and its ideology. There exists no well functioning actual leftist economies.

That's because it hasn't been done correctly.  THIS time they'll get it right.

As an example, the US economy was doing just fine as a capitalist system.  There are some winners, some losers, but the key has always been a high degree of mobility up, and down, the economic ladder.  The problem arose with creeping socialism.  Some of those up at the top felt guilty for what they have, and require those somewhat lower on the ladder to give a portion of their wealth to those at the bottom.  The middle loses its mobility and gets resentful.  The bottom gets lazy.  The solution?  More money from the middle to the bottom.  But the bottom expands from laziness, the middle shrinks, and eventually the only solution is to go full socialist.  No one has anything.  Except those at the very top.  They will always survive and prosper.

All the more reason we need secession, civil war and revolution. All legally, and non violent of course.

I think a free system will always tend to become socialist and we need periodic revolution and reset. The reason is because for the free market to work, we must be willing to let people starve. If you don’t work, you don’t eat. If you’re lazy you don’t eat. In the collective this results in the most people actually working. There are very few who starve. But there are always some. And there are always bleeding hearts to rescue (enable) them. Charity for the truly disabled is the ideal and the limit this assistance should take.

But it becomes politicized. People who crave power notice that promising food to the “poor” gets them votes and hence power and so social programs begin which redistribute wealth from the producers to the non-producers, thus incentivizing laziness and creating more and more “poor”.

We aren’t willing to stand by and let people starve to death, so we will always start the ball rolling toward socialism and then like a snowball rolling downhill we’re doomed.

I'm going to have to re-study my history.  How did the Roman Empire survive so long with essentially the same form of government?

I think you mean the Roman Republic, not the Roman Empire.  Historians distinguish the two because of the change in governance. The Republic was considered democratic, the Empire not so much. The online Encyclopedia Britannica seems to have a decent article on the history of the Republic:

Yep. They became an empire, which is what will likely happen to us. Already has really.

Back on bugs, they’re ok chocolate covered. I kid. Steak? Medium rare, blood ok by me. Even if it gets on the veggies (sorry Rush). Yeah no shrimp heads! BTW I like shrimp better than lobster. Fav meat though I’d say I’d chicken. I recall a waiter asking how I wanted it cooked once. Look at my wife, then said “cooked”! Must’ve been new I guess. Couple ladies next to us got a chuckle out of my response.

To those at the top, the form of government is irrelevant. The bourgeoisie will exist anywhere - communist Russia or capitalistic America.
