So we have, yet another Allahu Ackbar truck attack, this time in NYC. Even the uber-partisan lefty Mayor has to call it what it was.
Perp jumped out of truck yelling Snackbar and brandishing fake weapons, probably expected to be killed - only got shot in the ass.
At some point folks might recognize we are actually in a war, whether we want to acknowledge it or not.
Prayers for the victims and survivors.

Not just travel bans, but more secure borders and a better vetting process for those we give visas to.

I'm going to get slammed for this, but here goes.
I want immigration to the US halted. Completely. For anyone, anywhere, any time. Exceptions will be made by the president, veep, cabinet officers, and maybe the speaker of the house. Every immigrant, stay in your own country and work to improve it.
Here's my reasoning. Often, the most motivated people in other countries strike out and try to get to the US under one or more of the visa programs. What it does, in real time is leave a power, or motivation vacuum in the home country when these people leave. We have seen ample evidence of it in Mexico as that country continues to slide into permanent 3rd world status. Everyone who can, and everyone who is motivated to make things better for themselves see the US as the solution. What they need to see is that there is no solution in the US, and that they need to bring about reform, and use their motivation and strength to solve their own nations problems.
I say this as someone who wants what is best for the US as a whole. We just don't NEED another 10,000 laborers. We don't NEED another 8,000 religious fanatics. We don't need anyone except maybe some brilliant scientist, or chemist, or engineer who already has bonifides and wants to come to the US. For those very few people, they will be handled on a one-by-one basis.

^^^^The vast majority of other countries have STRINGENT immigration requirement that include only those professions, or skills that THEY NEED. You are SOL if you don't possess that. Their response? Too Effing bad.

At the very least, let's ban those people who promote legal systems other than ours. If you come to a country and you want to promote an overthrow of the laws of the country, they are justified in refusing you entry.

This is EXACTLY what happened to our own inner cities with desegregation. The most motivated left for the burbs leaving the less motivated behind, which meant the less intelligent and possibly more prone to disabling mental disorders (which a high percent of prison populations have). Those lower quality people, if you will, are supported by public housing and welfare but their opportunities for honest work were taken away when the more motivated and more moral (preachers, professionals and small businessmen) abandoned the city. I think this is what you are saying about foreign countries and I suggest you are exactly correct.

Interesting question for me is why the DoD under Obama and with his outright disdain for gun rights did NOT ensure this guys record was shared, he was a known violent psycho, that does not fit with the general anti-gun rights approach from the past 8 years and I find myself wondering why unless it was some clerk who did not want to strip the guy of his rights (although clearly this is a guy who should NOT have been able to buy any weapons after his discharge).

We are coddling our violent felons such that short of a violent rape and murder no one is going to prison anymore. It is not inconceivable that a bleeding heart SJW in the Pentagon thought it was enough that this guy got a dishonorable discharge.
Or more likely, a typical FedGov fuck up, from the people who want to run our entire health care industry.

I think probably just a typical clerk fuck up. With how everything is digitized these days, records are horrifically distorted. I see it in my own healthcare record, they get almost nothing right and I see it in my contract job which involves scouring millions of database lines. You fat finger a field and add an extra character the entire record will be ignored or mislabeled. Or somebody just simply didn't bother to upload it. Who knows.
