Cool Places to Fly / Trip from Heber UT to Moriarty NM and Phoenix AZ
« on: September 29, 2021, 08:10:57 PM »
After a good visit to Park City UT, I returned home to Falcon Field in Mesa AZ via Moriarty NM where I had a look at a 1-26E glider to purchase.

A layer of building clouds caused me to file for a pop-up IFR clearance. I only flew about 0.1 hours of actual IMC though.

The Colorado River near Moab, UT.

Finally nearing home as the sun was setting.

Pilot Zone / Low-ish IFR departures

From PoA and of interest to me. What do people think:

"I'm finding departing into ceilings below about 750' to be the hardest part of instrument flying. Much harder than approaches to near minimums.

Excellent imc practice day today here, so I hand flew to mto to get lunch. Went imc about 400', and got behind the airplane. I kept within acs standards, but only just. I seldom have trouble flying imc, but all the times I've gotten behind have been taking off into fairly low ceilings.

I find it much easier to fly approaches. Really not much harder than cruise, I suppose because the airplane is stable and configured. On takeoff there's more things to do in a shorter span. Maybe the transition into imc is more disorienting than I'm giving it credit for.

Is this hard for everybody? Maybe I'm worrying too much about managing my engine and dropping my scan too long. Obviously engaging the autopilot makes it easy, but I feel like I need to be able to hand fly anything I'm willing to take on with the a/p, especially considering it's older than me."

Very little information out there so far on the crash. The victims are a couple and their adult son, the latter being the survivor. They were evidently very much a flying family.

Pilot Zone / Boeing B-17E 'Flying Fortress' Plane Is on Sale for $9 Million
« on: September 26, 2021, 06:56:38 PM »
From PoA:

A rare unit of the aircraft that was used to further the autopilot system is almost restored ready to be purchased.

It is rare to get one's hands-on war relics. Rifles might still be a bit easier, but tanks and aircraft are usually found in military museums and barely anywhere near their prime. But for the handsome price tag of $9 million, you can own a piece of aviation history that is fully restored to its former glory. A rare unit of the B-17E, that was built in Seattle and used to further the autopilot system, is now almost restored and available for sale.

Pilot Zone / Fairly limited photos
« on: September 23, 2021, 03:08:28 PM »
I was going to post some photos from a recent flight for people's enjoyment, but it seems the size of total attachments is limited to 1 MB which is quite limiting. Can we get more space and throughput for the forum?

A shuttle to Susie's is available. Fuel is available both there at the FBO from the truck and for a reduced price from the self-serve pumps on the NW side of the runways. Pilot Zone / The Last Fighter Pilot of WWII with video
« on: September 16, 2021, 08:55:08 PM »
“Take five minutes to watch this magnificent talk --Listen carefully to what Captain Jerry Yellin, the pilot of the last mission of WWII, says and how he says it on his visit to Iwo Jima.

You’ll enjoy every second of it.

How many of the few surviving WWII veterans kept themselves and their uniform in such good condition for over 70 years and can still proudly wear it?

Notice his superb and articulatedelivery, no teleprompter, no script -- just a 91-year-old fighter pilot representing the greatest generation at home and abroad who won WWII.

He has some surprises and a great take on the philosophy of life.

Enjoy !”
